Joe - and everyone - good question. You were also asking about dual band antennas and the ability to move it between the car and house.
Both those rigs pictured are single band 144 MHz rigs. If you truly want dual band you’ll need one that does 144/440 (2m/70cm) and an antenna to match.
If you want to use it in the house you’ll need a 12V power supply good for 20 amperes, probably, and of course a dual band antenna at the house. And of course you’ll need to mount the rig such that it’s easy to take in and out!
Where do you live/commute? That would help. If you are near repeaters along the way then a 5W handheld may be adequate.
Someone I know just bought an Icom ID-4100A and likes it, and HRO (www.hamradio.com) has that for $299 after rebates. It is dual band and does Icom’s version of digital (D-star). That could be a good choice. If you don’t need dual band there are a few on sale for $125-ish. Any of the 50-80 watt mobiles would do fine for 2m/70cm repeaters.
I hope this helps. You may want to visit the Salem HRO and chat.
