On Saturday afternoon, April 6, an astronaut on the ISS will be talking to a
Scout group in Ontario via ham radio. We should be listen in on the downlink
for most of the pass here in New England on any 2M radio.

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with
participants at 58th Hamilton Scout Group, Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada on
06 Apr. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 18:31UTC. The
duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The
contact will be direct between NA1SS and VE3DC. The contact should be
audible over Ontario, Canada and adjacent areas. Interested parties are
invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to
be conducted in English.

 

The 58th Hamilton Scout Group, located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada,
provides youth across genders aged 5 to 26 the opportunity to participate in
educational activities in keeping with the `Canadian Path' program
established by Scouts Canada. The `Canadian Path' encourages curiosity and
imagination by encouraging youth to pursue their individual interests and
skills within a program structure unique to the Scout movement. The
`Canadian Path' also lays strong emphasis on Science, Engineering,
Technology and Math (STEM) activities. The radio contact with astronaut St.
Jacques aboard the ISS will therefore help us further our educational
mandate, as it relates to Scouts Canada's STEM emphasis. 

 

The ISS callsign is presently scheduled to be NA1SS

 

The scheduled astronaut is David St-Jacques KG5FYI"

 

 

 

Leandra notes - The ISS pass for us will start on Saturday at 2:32 P.M. and
last until 2:43 P.M. local time with the ISS rising from the southwest,
going directly overhead, then setting in the northeast

The listening frequency will be 145.800 MHz, FM. Anything better than a
rubber duck antenna should work OK (a 1/4 or 5/8 wave mag mount on a car
would work well if you are in an area with a good view of the sky).
