Hi All,
Let's jump right in here.
One of the biggest tasks for a competent Field Day operation is a good
information technology setup (IT).
This generally requires computers, preferably laptops, for each station. If
you are like me, bringing your personal laptop with the past 20 years of tax
returns etc. is a big ask.
Fortunately, I work with a hardcore E-waste D-container diver, who is also a
ham (K9MR), and as a result I have access to 4 (or more if we want) HP 655
and/or HP 255 laptops.
Note, I'm still thinking/planning along the lines of a 2E operation, that
would be 2 main HF stations, a GOTA station and a VHF/UHF station (hence the
requirement for 4 laptops).
They have all been loaded with legal, fresh, activated Windows 8.1 installs.
Specs can be viewed here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03326941
I'm doing testing with them now. My expectation is these will run N1MM+,
keying and a few other apps without breaking a sweat. K9MR is selling these
for $40 each and I will buy four to support the Field Day operations
assuming a successful test.
These would be offered to BARS members at the same price if a couple of you
want to buy them after using them for the weekend. That will be great.
Otherwise I will just list them on E-bay.
So that is a major problem solved for the Field Day operation.
However, the club could use an onsite, IT manager. This would be to
primarily set up a mini-network, either Wi-Fi or wired. In this fashion all
laptops will share the contact database and we can avoid working dupes etc.
If you have the skills and the desire to help out in this area --> LET ME
KNOW!
