Well, I found a workaround:
Now the fitting locks up tight, and the VSWR didn't change (at least thru 230 MHz, which is pretty good for PL259...
#McMasterCarrToTheRescue!
If anyone runs into this problem and wants a few, send me a SASE, I've got a lifetime supply.
