[bars] I'm annoyed with this election stuff

Hi All,
I would like to chime in and echo both Willie’s and Phil’s sentiments. My thought is that we want someone who will step up and take the extra effort to accomplish their goals to represent our interests. I have my favorite in the race, but we are fortunate to have three candidates who are all accomplished hams with track records of supporting and enhancing the hobby.

I look at it as 'everyone has a facet of this hobby that they get obsessed about', and these guys want to represent hams to the ARRL. More power to them, this kind of unpaid public service is hard to come by.

Gary,
The reason you may not remember any "slick" color advertising is because, until three years ago, Tom Frenaye, K1KI, ran unopposed as our director for over twenty years.
Re your question, "What kind of power or wealth do they expect from the positions?" Frankly, your question is confusing because elected ARRL officers are not paid a salary; there are no "kick backs" or benefits to being an official. (Believe me--I know.) Is your question instead directed at eliciting a negative emotional response?
There are three dedicated individuals who are campaigning diligently for the honor of representing you and other ARRL members who reside in New England. Each of the candidates is doing his best to convey information about himself, and what he's accomplished--or hopes to accomplish. You shouldn't criticize them for doing so.
If you're dissatisfied with the current crop of candidates, then no one is forcing you to vote. Let me be helpful to you: there can be no write-in ballots. Candidates must be approved by the Board of Directors Ethics Committee to ensure that they meet the minimum qualifications to hold office and have no conflicts of interest.
Re email lists: the ARRL supplies mailing address lists of members. It's trivial for a candidate to deduce from that list an email address of the form, "W1GFF at arrl.net <mailto:W1GFF at arrl.net> " or perform a lookup on QRZ.com <http://QRZ.com> . There's nothing sinister about it.

Am I the only one who is annoyed about the “advertising” and “manipulating” certain people are doing to try and become “New England Director” of the ARRL?
In my 15 years as a ham I do not remember the slick full color advertising campaigns being mailed to me by various candidates or the polished video presentations.
This, to me, just perpetuates the impression that “Ham Radio is for Rich People” who can afford to have tower companies install towers to rival broadcast stations, have special additions made to their homes to house their “studios” and now to mount all out “advertising campaigns”. To what end - ??? What kind of power or wealth do they expect from the positions? Or is it just “I’m rich and I have ego so vote for me” !?!
I have spoken privately to some other hams who agree with these sentiments, so I think it is time for all of us to pause and reflect. Do we really want the guy who can afford the fanciest campaign, or do we want “real people” who aren’t trying to show off.
Fred K and Tom F – I will NOT be voting for either one of you. I will do a write-in candidate if I have to. I hope others will do the same.
I am also wondering where at least one of the candidates got the e-mail address list from – hmmmmmm!
