A bit more reading has lead me to believe that the internal fuse (which 
I was not able to find on the schematic) is for the external tuner 
interface.

My days as a bench tech were a few decades ago (Wang Tewksbury) and I 
lack anything beyond a cheap VM.  I'll going to be bold and pull the 
covers off today and have a VERY CAUTIOUS poke around.

In the meantime, I've got my eye on a IC-756proII on Craigslist for a 
decent price... <sigh>
