Brendon,
You need a lot more information from her before recommending any equipment or how to get started in the hobby let alone recommending
any mode or band.
Usually, it helps to find out why she wants to be a ham and how she heard of it. Then she can perhaps join a club (like BARS) to
help get started but even better is to find a mentor (we used to call them Elmers) who can guide her first steps.
Hooking her up with a class also may be a good idea of which there usually are several around.
I get a lot of calls like this as ARRL Eastern Massachusetts section manager so you can have her give me a call.

Subject: [bars] help for a new ham
>From W 1 L P G
A woman in our neighborhood wants to become a ham. She found out that I am one,
so she phoned me last night. Especially she wants to get equipment for her car, so I
presume we are talking 2 meters and 440. It is too bad she just missed Deerfield,
but if anybody has any recommendations on used or new , please let me know.
I am still so old fashioned, I have no experience with FT8 etc. Do you suggest that she
go that far, on a first step?
