The expression “lid” predates the Age of Acronyms (AOA) :-)

Much like “ham” (which should never be written/typed in all caps) it was in use even 100 years ago by landline telegraphers. Like many slang terms, the precise origin has multiple stories — none of which can be really verified.

It’s just part of our history.
