Yes, Terry, I limit my mobile 2 M / 440 rig to mid – power as well. Forgot to mention that. Good suggestion.

I’ve been very happy with the PowerPole version of cigarette lighter adapter. I have powerpole connections on almost all my radio power cables. https://powerwerx.com/cigbuddy-cigarette-lighter-powerpole-adapter
I connect this adapter to a powerpole distribution box that powers my ham gear. My current unit is https://powerwerx.com/west-mountain-radio-rigrunner-4005
In between the lighter adapter and the pier distribution is a power monitor https://powerwerx.com/west-mountain-radio-rigrunner-4005
Very seldom to I run my mobile radios at high power… almost always at low to mid.

Hi Joann,
I too, like Geoff, use a Bioenno (not cheap) battery, but only for HF portable (POTA, FD, etc) when I am running 100 Watts and drawing up to 20 A. For my 2 meter/440 mobile, I still use a cigar type plug but it is a heavy duty one with binding posts and can handle 10 A and is vented to dissipate heat. RadioShack used to sell them but they are still available on Amazon. See link below. Or maybe Electronics Plus in Littleton, You-Do -It in Needham, auto parts stores or truck stops have them.

It got so hot that the plastic melted and the soldered joint disconnected from the metal but the fuses still good.
