Make a sked with someone to see how it goes.

Are you using a horizontally or vertically polarized antenna?
Omnidirectional or directional? How high?

You probably want a horizontally polarized antenna to be compatible with
other stations on the band.

If you have a rotatable directional antenna, you need to have a sense for
the beamwidth so you know how accurately the antenna needs to be pointed at
the other station. If you're calling cq, you want to be pointed to a place
where a reply is likely to come from.
