Yup, horizontal is the norm for most everything besides FM on ham
VHF/UHF. OK, if you're talking about satellites circular polarization
can be a thing but that is a bit beyond the scope of this discussion. ;-)
You will see a rather high loss with mismatched polarization. It is not
100%, for example I can work FM repeaters with my horizontal yagi but I
do have to crank up the power and make sure I am pointed in the correct
direction.
This is a long way of saying that, yes, you can work FT8 on 2M with a
vertical but you are going to be very limited in range as most folks
will be using horizontal antennas.
I'm available most days if you want to do a sked on 2M FT8/FT4/SSB.
