I am new to this, I got my Tech license last month and am currently
studying for my General and taking exam on the 13th. I was looking to get
recommendations for a handheld that I could use till I save up to get a
mobile station. I would like to be able to participate in the Bars Net.

Helpful if this is something I could pick up at Ham Radio in Salem NH

the QRZ handheld. It's not a super fancy Handheld but it works very well.

Congrats on getting your Technician license!? The QRZ Explorer was the 
same one I got upon receiving my license!

It doesn't have a lot of fancy features (e.g. APRS, DMR) but it's good 
enough to allow you to get on the repeaters.? I would just recommend 
replacing the stock antenna with a whip antenna.? I later purchased an 
Ed Fong J-pole which I put in my attic which vastly improved the 
performance of the radio.

I was just outside the time window when Gigaparts started selling the
Explorer.  I ended up buying the TYT UV88 which is the same radio.  It's
not a bad little radio.  I invested in a better antenna, and when I
participated in my first volunteer event (Bay State Marathon) I bought a
higher capacity battery.  It is a very good place to start.

Congrats on your ticket!

I don't have one but I know some who have purchased the TIDRADIO TD-H3 and
newer hams like the ability to program it wirelessly from an app on their
phone. Some HTs are hard to program from the front panel so early on when
you are still discovering repeaters and adding new channels I can see how
the app programming could be helpful.

I practiced with the free Android app that has all the test questions and
explanations. Took the test three times in one day and passed on the third
try.

I will totally defer to a more active VE, but it looks like a new Extra
question pool goes into effect July 1, per

The end of that page encourages people who have studied using the book you
reference to take their test before the end of June.

In my limited experience, the question pools don?t radically change. I used
the 1998 edition of the General license manual to pass the exam in 2016 and
felt like it was exactly what I had studied. Some of the questions may be
reworded, and a few new questions may be added on newer digital modes, but
the core concepts don?t change. So personally, I would be comfortable
buying the current 12th Edition but taking the exam in July or later.

I would recommend that you take a few practice exams online ahead of time.
(Unrelated to the change.) It?s helpful for knowing where to focus on
studying more, and gives you confidence in your skills. I cannot recommend
a specific site because the one I used, run by a ham on his personal
website, now requires payment?!

Good morning. My experience with the ICOM HamStudy app was great. Very affordable and very effective learning tool that utilizes the same format as the actual test ! I studied with this tool for a few months and passed the test easily.?Check on line for a club that conducts tests on regular basis.?Good luckGreg

I just receive a call from Gary W1GFF He is not able to be there tonight and Pastor Ryan is away at a baseball game.
So unless someone who has a kay to open it the church will be locked up.

I was just thinking, if there was an underwater quake and a tsunami were
coming, even a small one, they'd have to vamoose over the coral reefs to
the dinghy's and to that bigger boat in record time. The way I move these
days I'd have to strap on a life jacket and hope I wouldn't float too far.

An atoll is basically a spike in the middle of the ocean.  Tsunamis just go

I just finished watching the recording this morning. Wow! What an amazing
look into a DXpedition, especially for a new ham like me. As mentioned in
the video, it truly was the ultimate field day. We always have great
presentations (thanks Doug) but, in my opinion, that one was the best since
I've been a member. Thanks for setting that up, recording, and getting
permission to share with the members who couldn't attend the meeting.

Hmmm?. so the 911 system does not have a redundant system it can fail over to if the primary system goes down? Even way more modest enterprise systems (like the ones i sell) have 100% redundancy and fail over to the disaster recovery site in real time. Does MA not treat 911 as a mission critical system? Will be interesting to know from someone who has intimate knowledge of the setup.

Interesting...? If one can take the report at face value they mention 
that the 911 centers could see the phone number of the caller and then 
was able to call them back. Assuming this is a VoIP system, honestly 
what phone system isn't these days, this tells me that the SIP traffic 
was making it through but the audio data was not.? These are typically 
carried on different network ports and require specific firewall rules 
to allow them through.? There is a common problem with VoIP system 
refereed to as 'one-way audio' in which the calls are connected but only 
one of the parties can hear the other.? This situation is almost always 
caused by a misconfiguration of a firewall.? It could also have been a 
defense mechanism whereby some firewalls can block specific ports if it 
sees 'unusual' activity on a port.

If this was the case no amount of redundancy/failover would have helped 
- the system wasn't down, calls were still going through.

Redundancy also implies you keep the old working system as your fail over and deploy the new config and if that goes foobar you fail over back to the old known working system. So redundancy infact does cover these ?f**k ups? too.

 

Additionally, if there was a new config for the firewall, I would have expected that to be tested and validated in a test system (UAT) before being deployed live. These are common practices for much lesser systems. Don?t know what process they use, or the skill of their employees as far as robust enterprise systems go.

I spent about 10 years in public safety/police comms for 2 different companies. I?ve seen contracts cancelled and companies fail because of this type of stuff. I prefer to keep private about which company had the issues.

FWIW, I was a principal software engineer at Oracle for 15 3/4 years. If 
your business is airline reservations or online sales (amazon) or yes, 
911 centers etc, you can't lose a single transaction.... ever. Your 
computers can crash or one of your data centers can literally burn to 
the ground and you just keep going. We know how to do this.

It's easy to design a system in a lab that can withstand certain
predictable failures. With a large production system at scale, it's
virtually impossible. You just get much more exotic failure modes. "100%
redundant" does not mean "100% reliable."

Some fun ones I've personally encountered:

- A trivial config change, peer-reviewed and tested in lower environments,
took down all four production load balancers at a previous company. The
config change itself was fine, but it triggered a latent bug in healthcheck
rules that erroneously flagged all backend webservers as unhealthy. (This
also meant that our alerts steered us in the wrong direction.)

- Our gear in a well-regarded data center went offline during a blizzard.
There were independent A and B power grids with our equipment sitting on
both, and each was protected by a giant UPS and redundant generators. Turns
out the blizzard was a red herring, and the data center happened to do some
routine maintenance, failing one grid over to a generator that came up
putting out 60 Volts. It also turns out that some switches upstream of us
were only on the affected power grid, so despite our equipment staying
online and us having redundant switches with VRRP from the carrier,
everything in the building fell off the Internet for at least an hour.

- A small UPS fire in a remote data center caused no impact to my gear. The
Secaucus fire chief ordering that they kill all power sources while they
worked, however, caused a major impact. (So did the company declaring
bankruptcy a few months later, with less than 24 hours notice before
shutting down operations, but that's another story.)

- A "high-availability" clustered filesystem with STONITH fencing was
designed to detect split-brain scenarios and have the quorum shut down a
rogue node to prevent data corruption. Some network glitch we never
entirely figured out caused multiple partitions, each thinking the others
were bad, so they all powered each other off. By dumb luck, this happened
in our QA environment and not production, so it was a fun adventure rather
than a nightmare.

And these aren't even the really fun ones, like BGP route leaks/hijacking.

At this point they haven't said anything about the cause of the outage
except that it involved a firewall. It's possible it was a really foolish,
preventable mistake, but right now no one knows.

It is hard to believe it is older than 15 years, and the concepts of
high-reliablity system design are not novel.  AT&T did it quite well for
years.  Even Verizon VOIP over FiOS and IP over FiOS is very solid.

I'm with bammi here; good design of a critical system involves full
redundancy (in a different physical location, with insight into the
actual fiber locations), a staging system for testing updates, and a
managed update process where only half of it is updated and then is
shaken out for a while before the other half is updated.

Even for some stuff I run at home, I have a staging setup to quality
software updates.  Most software can just be rolled back, but things
that do database scheme upgrades are much harder.

Firewall configuration is hard; they were a little disingenous to say
that the cause was a firewall, avoiding saying whether there was a
hardware failure, a latent vendor bug that was expressed, a new config
that was loaded, operator error, etc.

I wonder if this system handles VZ-VOIP and VZ-copper calls too, or if
it's for cell only and the state is acting like that's all there is.
(No, I didn't dial 911 to test this during the outage!)

Field day has finally arrived this weekend so we hope that all of you can join us at the Billerica Emergency Operations Center at 67 Alexander Rd. This is your chance to make as many contacts with other hams around the country, try some new modes of operation and make new friends.

Tomorrow night, Friday we'll be setting up the dipole for 40 & 80 meters at around 7:00 if you would like to join us. The real fun starts Saturday morning at 9:00 AM when we set up the tower and the 20m, 15m, 10 meter beam. We could use some help assembling the antenna and helping to get the tower up so please join us. 

The radios and computers will also be set up and networked so we can log contacts as we go. At 2:00 the operation begins and we start making contacts. We made well over 700 contacts last year so we would like to see if we can hit the 1000 contact level so we need your help! This is a great chance for technicians to try the high frequencies which is a different beast from 2 meters. Once you get the bug and contact that rare European station you'll be studying for your Generals license in no time!

Dinner will be served by chef Manny which will consist of Alpine beef burgers, hot dogs and steak along with a variety of tasty pasta dishes from Strombolis. Manny did a great job 2 years ago so we asked him back again this year so don't miss out!

We'll be operating throughout the night for anyone who wants to stay. There will be coffee and plenty of food so we can make a good effort for our score. There are cots on the 2nd floor for anyone who wants to get some shut eye during the night.

Last year we monitored lightning strike map apps and were ready to disconnect antennas from expensive equipment if they were getting too close.

First off, a HUGE thank you to Mark, KA1INE, for managing this year's event.  Early counts indicate that the club set a new record for FD contacts!

I've uploaded my photos to a shared Google Drive folder.  Hopefully I've set it up correctly so that anyone with the link can view the collected images & upload their own contributions.  I'm fine if you want to share them on the socials although I would ask that if there is an identifiable face other than your own in the image that you ask that person(s) before doing so.

Art: Would it be OK with you if I added the pics you have shared on the reflector to the shared folder?

Finally, an apology from yours truly for the ghastly ('ghostly'?) group photo.  I had setup the camera for an indoor photo and neglected to re-adjust when we moved outside.  In my defense I was working with 90mins of sleep in the prior 36hrs running on Mt. Dew and bug spray... and no donuts. ;-)

Greetings BARSians,

Back in 2022 when I was a freshly minted ham the 13 Colonies Event was 
my first exposure to 'special event stations' (SES).? I was excited by 
the chase for all 16 stations (the original 13 US colonies plus 3 bonus 
stations) and was able to get a clean sweep!? It was my first paper 
certificate so it, and the event, holds a special place in my heart.

This year I'm honored to be one of the stations operating as K2H 
representing Mass. during the 13 Colonies event.? The event runs from 
July 1st through the 7th with operations on all HF bands (excluding 
60m), as well as 2 and 6 meters simplex.? I don't yet have a schedule 
for my freqs & modes (I'll be doing SSB & digital including RTTY).
