Picked up the radio in Portland last weekend (pleasant ride on the Amtrak
Downeaster). Came with the radio w/mike, mounting bracket, detached head
mount cable and an MFJ-925 antenna tuner that can interface to the radio.
$450 for the lot. Radio works fine, and was pleasantly surprised to find
that it's one of the serial numbers Yaesu shipped with the DSP-2 chip
already on the circuit board. I cleaned it up and I think it's going to be
a replacement for my FT-840.

60 meters and all the other bells and whistles that come with the D model.

(ATNO for me), North Korea (ATNO for most everyone) and Antarctica that 
were suspiciously loud and completely unresponsive to my calls.? A quick 
check of QRZ.com indicated that there was no info on these calls.? I was 
experiencing an FT8 'hash collision'.

The short version of the story is that the FT8 protocol uses a shortcut 
(a hash code) to send some callsigns.? In some rare-ish cases it is 
possible for multiple call signs to have the same hash code value.? For 
example (this is a made up example), 'PY2PEACE' could share the same 
hash code as 'P5AXXX'.? So while PY2PEACE is active on FT8 it may appear 
in your decode list as P5AXXX.? You start frantically calling P5AXXX 
with no response.? There is a much longer, and detailed description of

So if you happen to run across a P5 on 10m FT8 and it is not under the 
Mother-of-all-pileups you can simply restart your FT8 software and it 
will rebuild the hash code table.? This will work a lot of the time, but 
not always.? So do a little research on that too-good-to-be-true call 
before you tape down your 'Enable TX' button.

The problem may be the use of the wrong hashing algorithm. They are
generating max of 22 bit hashes. Too me, that is ancient history. I only
use sha256 to generate hashes.

The protocol has to balance the size of the payload (bits sent) with the 
bandwidth required to send it.? The hash size they have chosen works the 
vast majority of the time.

One operating tip to reduce the chances of it happening to you is to 
/not /include any unnecessary suffixes to your call. For example, don't 
add '/QRP' to your call when operating FT8. You can put it into your TX6 
message instead. (e.g. 'CQ QRP K1DC FN42')

Hi all,

At the meeting, I spoke with Mark about the VARA license group purchase I'm
organizing and he said he was interested but he hasn't signed up yet using
the link from my previous email. I looked at the email membership list
but couldn't tell which email was potentially his as none appear to have
his name or his callsign in the address. I also checked the usual places
like QRZ.com.

Anyway, I've received a great response to the group buy so I'll probably
close the signups soon and I don't want to leave Mark (or anyone else) out
who may be interested. If someone has his contact info could they share it
with me? I want to make sure he has an opportunity to be included. Or if
you speak with him you can just let him know about this message. For anyone
else who may have thought about getting in on the group buy but didn't sign
up, I'll include the link again below. You may want to get your name on the
list sooner rather than later as well.

Thanks to the folks who already signed up as well! I actually got my 71ft
end fed set up on Friday to try to QSO with Niece, KA1ULN, when she did her
YL POTA activation. I wasn't successful there but I did successfully use
VARA to connect to our ARRL Eastern Mass Section Traffic Manage's (KW1U)
Digital Traffic Station for the first time which operates on 40 and
80-meter bands! I didn't have traffic to exchange as it was just a test,
but with my VARA license I'll be able to quickly upload and download NTS
traffic using this connection in the future.

The only thing I notice is you have a plus sign in the row for the offset
and the Westford, WB1GOF repeater is a negative offset. This would also
explain why transmit isn?t working but receive is based on what you have on
your sheet.

When I updated our clocks last Saturday night, I thought I had done everything
correctly.  (I even did the XYL's wristwatch).
Eventually I remembered the clock in the car.   What did I forget???

the battery-operated thermostats for keeping the house warm at the right time!

But that brings me to a suggestion:  If you are installing (or even after installing)
such a device, instead of simply replacing the old analog thermostat, you should
just wire up the new one IN PARALLEL with the old.

The reasons are to simplify some situations, so you do not have to do a complicated
re-programming of the new one.

If you are going away for a week in winter, and do not want the heat coming on
unnecessarily, just turn off the electronic one, and set the old manual one
to a low temperature, just enough  to keep pipes from freezing.  I always leave the
old one set around 55 - 60
  2.
If  you are going to be out of the house some winter day, but already had
programmed it to be on in the afternoon, do the same as above.
  3.
You might want the temperature to be on at a higher temperature than usual for
a while, or  for a longer time, or at a different time  (e.g., visitors,  e.g., the
weather forecast is so disastrous that you want the heat to stay on all night, in
case you lose power) .
  4.
One part of our house has unprotected pipes going to heat a room above, and

            we have had  trouble  during a few serious cold snaps.  I put a thermostat in parallel,
            and placed it close to a pipe, but set at a very low temperature (some
           experimentation was needed).   This has proved worthwhile, because only on
            a few very cold days, the heat in the room above stayed above what was'
            normally needed.

If you are using a heat pump do not cycle the thermostat during the day. There is no need to do so.

Just set the temperature once and don?t touch it until the end of heating season or if you are away from the house for an extended period.

Heat pumps only generate a small amount of of heat and are most efficient when set to a constant temperature.

For the last 12 years my house has been entirely heated by two air source heat pumps. There is no fossil fuel in my house.

We occasionally have four.  Not too rarely three and often two.  In the
town competition I think we have occasionally benefited from the propensity
of Lowell, Billerica and Chelmsford to qualify the town name with north,
south etc.  Causing the moderator to dilute the town credits to our benefit.

I probably shouldn?t be giving that away?

I need a contractor who can hang a Cobra Ultra Sr. 140 ft dipole between 2
very tall trees, remove a HyGain AV14AVQ from my roof and replace it with a
J-pole antenna using the existing coax, and further raise an HDTV
directional antenna on the side of my home using military poles.

Any recommendations? I need someone who has done this before and knows what
they are doing, not just winging it for the first time.

Juan,

FYI: I've used the Cobra Ultralite Senior for about 15 years and like 
the antenna a lot. Eventhough they claim the range is 160 to 10 meters, 
I've also had good results on 6 meters. For me the best way to hang the 
antenna was to get a cheap archery set (Dicks sporting goods [about 
$25]) and shoot a weighted arrow with fishing line attached. I've not 
had good results with wrist rocket type sling shots.

Hello fellow ham radio community members. It is that time of the year where
we start pitching for ham radio support for the annual Westford Apple
Blossom Parade. This year's parade will be held rain or shine on Saturday,
May 18th. The parade starts in Westford Center and ends at the Abbot School.
It has been hosted by the Westford Kiwanis (https://westford.org/kiwanis/)
and has a long history in town. PART has been providing comm support for
many years. Parade starts at 10 AM, we usually muster around 8AM for any
last minute updates and to insure adequate coverage. Parade is done usually
before noon. Your assignment could finish earlier.

 

All you need is a 2 meter FM handheld that works with the 146.955 WB1GOF
repeater. Some assignments are stationary at specific parade route
locations, others may be to be a shadow to one of the Kiwanis Parade
organizers.

I am selling my Yaesu FT-840 160-10m HF transceiver. It was serviced by Jim
Smith at Burghardt Radio Service in June of 2023 and was found to need
nothing except a little lubrication on the VFO knob.

The unit has been upgraded with all the available options, including:

   - TCXO-4 Master Reference Oscillator (the original oscillator that was
   pulled will be included in the sale)
   - FM-unit 747
   - YF-112c 500 hz 8-pole CW crystal filter
   - YF-112a 6khz AM filter
   - MH-1 Microphone in excellent condition.
   - External Yaesu FIF-232 CAT system interface and a serial port cable to
   connect to your computer. This interface translates RS-232 from the
   computer to TTL levels required by the CAT interface and runs off 120vac.
   - USB CAT interface cable

Price is $800 firm, slightly under what I paid for everything. It is a very
nice example of this popular model. I am only selling it because I am
upgrading to an all-mode transceiver.

Additional purchase options:

For $250 additional I will throw in an as-new LDG AT-100ProII 125 watt
1.8-54 mhz dual antenna autotuner that I bought just a few months ago and
barely used. It works perfectly with the FT-840 and tunes *extremely* fast
to 1.5 SWR or below on all bands I have used..

For $100 additional I will throw in a Yaesu FC-800 100 watt autotuner
designed specifically for the FT-840. This one will match up to 3:1
impedances down to 1.5:1 or less on antennas with 16.5 to 150 ohm
impedances. *This tuner is intended for end-fed random wire or long whip
antennas.*

For $50 additional I will throw in an MFJ-925 IntelliTuner 200 watt 1.8-30
mhz automatic tuner in perfect working order with a Yaesu interface cable
which *DOES NOT* work with the FT-840 (Honestly, the LDG is a better
autotuner, but this works fine without the cable.)

If you want to get *truly* funky, I will throw in an MFJ Telepatch II phone
patching box wired for Yaesu 8 pin microphones, *for free*. Such a deal!
LOL!

Prices are cash, PayPal or Venmo. I can do Zelle but sometimes banks put
three day holds on Zelle payments to new recipients, and if that is the
case you will have to wait until the payment is posted on my account before
taking delivery. Same with personal checks too, they must clear before
taking delivery.

Everything is in Burlington MA. In exchange for a six-pack of good German
or Polish beer I will deliver within a 10 mile radius. ???

Handles up to 1500 watts PEP.

No delivery, you have to pick up yourself. It only weighs 9 lbs but it can
handle 80 mph winds.

Best part? *This one is free. *I also have a 2nd antenna in a box but it is
missing the M2 tube, 52" long, 1-1/8" diameter, you can get that at Lowes
