Hi everyone,

This Wednesday, 11/6, is our monthly membership meeting. Note that the
meetings are now hybrid and will take place at the Chelmsford Bible Church
at 128 Gorham Street in Chelmsford AND via Zoom at 7 pm EST. Be on the
lookout for Zoom info from Bruce over the next couple of days. Annual club
elections will be held at this month's meeting.

This month's guest speaker will be Anthony Luscre, K8ZT, on Successful
Operating Tools for Assessing Performance. Be sure to check out this
month's newsletter or w1hh.org for more info on Anthony and his
presentation.

As a reminder, BARS dues run from January 1 through December 31. Dues are
just $15 for the year and help pay for the club Zoom account, the website,
Field Day activities, etc. If you have not renewed, you can do so online at

I plug my nanoVNA into the computer, fire up desktop app, start a Nextcloud
Talk call that shares my screen, and connect my tablet. I can then go to my
antenna to mess with it and see the results on my tablet. Not exactly what
you asked for but it works and saves a lot of steps between my station and
my antenna.

So to be clear there - there is a computer interface that allows the VNA to
be used over USB.  I know there is PC/MacOS software (VNA Saver? ... from
memory) but not sure about tablet.  May be one of those areas where Apple
doesn't provide enough access to the USB (or lightning) but ... Dunno.  I
think the PC stuff is OSS so if someone were motivated ...

I believe Apple removed the requirement to include their encryption chip on
a device if you want it to connect to iOS but don't quote me on that.

If it can connect to Windows then the solution is one of those inexpensive
Win10 or Win11 tablet hybrids and Velcro. ?

Yeah, I used VNA saver on my pc via the nano vna h4?s usb C port. I?m not
aware of a tablet/mobile app that would work with that vna but I like have
the vna setup at my rig and being able to access it via the shared screen
on my table at my antenna. This way I can see changes as I move the antenna.

When:  Saturday, November 9 2024, 10:00AM - 12:00pm

What: The Eastern MA Section Amateur Radio Emergency Service<https://ema.arrl.org/ares/> will conduct a fall operations exercise to test its capability in establishing communications with stations within its section and outside it under simulated emergency conditions. The operational exercise called November Gale will test the ability of several home stations, EOCs, possible field sites and other stations to communicate. The exercise will attempt to build upon the lessons learned from our past operational exercises.  The scenario: The remnants of a tropical storm became a powerful hybrid system, leading to extensive power outages throughout eastern MA, coastal flooding on cape cod, and widespread ice damage in western and central MA.

Who: The North Middlesex ARES district will be operating for the VHF voice portion of the exercise. If you are interested in the section-wide exercise details, check out the latest news posted on the Eastern MA ARES<https://ema.arrl.org/> site.

Any amateur radio operator is welcome to join this exercise, even if you're not part of ARES, or a SKYWARN spotter, or haven't participated in a net before. Newcomers welcome!

Where: WB1GOF <http://www.wb1gof.org/repeaters/> Westford MA FM Repeater: 146.955mhz- tone: 74.4

How:
1.      Net control will announce the start of the drill and its purpose starting at 10am, then 10:30am, 11:00am, and 11:30am.
2.      Net control will ask for callsigns first, only callsigns, from any amateur radio operator that has a pretend SKYWARN damage report to share. When the repeater is free, give your callsign (preferably in phonetics). No other info is needed for this step.
3.      Once nothing more is heard, net control will call each individual callsign and ask for their report.
1.      When your callsign is called, please respond with: First name, affiliation if any (SKYWARN, ARES, RACES, none), your town, location of simulated severe weather damage, and short description of simulated storm damage. This is a drill, so feel free to be creative and make stuff up! Power outages, ice damage, trees into houses, etc.
4.      Net control will check for any additional stations, and once nothing more is heard, will close the net on the repeater until the next half hour.
Additional info:

The section-wide ARES exercise will be running from 10am-12pm as well. You are welcome to participate in any other aspects of this exercise if you can!

There's lots of options for different bands and different modes:

  *   10am-12pm: Voice check-in on any repeater linked in the MMRA Network<https://www.mmra.org/>
  *   10am-12pm: Interested in trying to pass messages on the Eastern MA National Traffic System (NTS<https://nts2.arrl.org/>) net? Listen in to the 145.230-Boston Repeater (pl 88.5 hz) during this exercise and participate if you can.
  *   10am-12pm: Send your own ICS-213 form (skywarn damage report) over Winlink to "WX1BOX"
  *
  *   10am-12pm: check-in on the special edition of the MA/RI Digital Ne<https://ema.arrl.org/massachusetts-rhode-island-digital-net/>t (MARIDN) NBEMS net on 80m, starting at 3582.5khz (1500 khz center) in Thor 22 mode. May move to 7042.5khz USB if conditions on 80m aren't working well.
  *   10:30am: check-in on 80 meters voice net (3930khz and up depending on what's open)
  *   10am-11:30am: Check-in on echolink <https://www.echolink.org/> on the *NEW-ENG3* conference node (9123)
  *   11:30am: check-in on the 6-meter voice net on 53.31mhz-Mount Wachusetts Repeater pl71.9

On December 1, 1924, the very low frequency (VLF) transmitter with call
sign "SAQ" at Grimeton Radio Station in Sweden, was put into commercial
operation. Transmissions were sent across the Atlantic Ocean to the
receiving station located at Riverhead, L.I., NY.  Replying messages were
sent from a  transmitter station located at Rocky Point, also on Long
Island.



  *On December 1, 2024, 100years later, SAQ will be on the air to
commemorate the event.* The unique

Alexanderson alternator from 1924, with the call sign SAQ, *is scheduled
for one (1)  transmission on VLF 17.2 kHz, CW, which will begin at 11:00
CET(10:00 UTC).*



    Visitors are welcome to the transmitter hall at Grimeton to experience
an SAQ transmission. Tickets can be purchased here.

channel.*

The turkeys will be distributed to people in need from 6:30 AM to 2:00 PM this coming Saturday.  The traffic management plan is enclosed and why we need AT LEAST 5 Amateur Radio operators to manage this.  As one might expect, there will be people lining up around several blocks and waiting for hours.  Volunteers should come around 6:00 AM to this event in the city of Lowell.

Who is involved:
??????Dwelling house of hope is a Lowell Community Group which provides food on a weekly basis to those in need.  This Saturday they are providing 1500 Turkeys and other fixings.  They have been doing this weekly for a decade and the Turkeys for several years as well.

??????Lowell Litter Krewe is a Lowell Community Group that picks up trash and has it carted away in dump trucks.  They have a good-sized volunteer community and are good at traffic management and logistics.   DHH asked LLK to help and LLK asked me to help coordinate communications for this event which will cover several city blocks.

??????All this will be in Lowell, Mt. Hope St, not far from Mammoth road and the Bay State Marathon racecourse, if you are familiar.

??????Please contact me directly if you will help.    Food will be provided to volunteers.   There is a genuine need for us to keep this complex event coordinated. If you have other plans, consider if you can cancel them for this.  Future events with these organizations will have a longer planning cycle in the future.  I surveyed the site as indicated in the attached plan and verified that it can be covered by radio.  That includes assuring that the church / concrete building will not be an issue for radio communications.

Hiya Folks,

The ARRL 10 Meter contest is coming up on Dec 14 & 15 UTC (starts Friday 
night local time). This is a great contest for beginners as it is on a 
single band, offers separate CW & SSB categories (or both!) as well as a 
'limited antennas' category for folks with wire antennas.? It is 
particularly well suited for Tech. class license holders as it is 
limited to 10 meters where you have CW & phone privileges.

We are at the peak of a sunspot cycle and 10m has been jumping!? This 
will be a great opportunity to dip your toe into contesting, increase 
your DXCC/WAS/WAZ count or simply test your stations capabilities on 10M.

This will be my first entry into this contest and I'm really looking 
forward to it!? I'm happy to take any questions (on or off list) folks 
may have -- I'll do my best to answer.

It was the 1989 10M contest, for me, hand logged, CW sent by hand, and all of 60 contacts resulting in a certificate ?First Place Single Op, Technician, Mixed Mode, Eastern Mass Section?.

 

That was in-between helping my very young family set up the Christmas tree and hang lights, sneaking away whenever I could to play radio.

 

It resulted in 35 years of follow-on contesting that I still love to this day. The certificate still hangs proudly in my shack.

For those of you may be interested, here are additional pictures of my Army
tent pole antenna tower.

If you would like to purchase tent poles for your own tower, they are
available in Easton MA, text Greg at 508-802-0647, he will give you
directions. He sells them on the honor system, you grab what you need from
the trailer (poles, guide wire stakes, etc.) and if he is not there you
leave the money in one of his trucks. *Make sure you grab the types of
poles with the thicker reinforced end*. They are stronger than the other
ones. Bring a small ladder to get into the back of the trailer.

If you want to use them for an actual tent, he also has the top pieces that
spread out and support the tent material.

I must admit when I?m net control and a 1x checks in with a K prefix my
brain wants to automatically add a C. This is why I use netlogger now. I?ve
loaded it with the whole FCC amateur DB and when I type in callsign it
gives me a lookup on the name and QTH. I assume in 2026 this will stop
happening when the KD1?s start coming on the air. Then you will magically
become KD1CPR!
