As a teenage Novice, living in Medford, I purchased my WN1LUS QSL cards from W1OLU.
I remember seeing his ads in QST advertising his QSL card business.
And traveling to his house on my bicycle to pick up my cards. It was somewhere near the old Swan School.

Thank you greatly for your reply!  Wow, what a small world.  My grandfather, Ronald Heckbert, W10LU, lived at 30 Magoun Ave. in Medford, two doors down from the railroad station and yes, near the Swan school which my Dad, uncles and aunts all attended.  I myself grew up in West Medford.

As I said he passed (1958) before I was born so never got to meet him.  According to my father, he was quite the Renaissance man and in addition to very eclectic interests he pretty much could master whatever he set his mind to.  Apparently, printing was one of those interests.  I found an old copy of QST and found one of his ads, thanks for pointing me in that direction.

What I find amazing is in the mid 50?s, creating QSL Cards like these or any printed material involved literally having a home printing press.  No going online, finding a template and downloading it, filling in the blanks and printing them on your home printer.  Also, creating the graphic for Mr. Bunney ? a rabbit with a microphone, involved a lot more than downloading clipart found online.  Most likely he purchased a bunny and a microphone type-piece from a mail-order company and set them in the design.

According to my mother, he suffered severely from agoraphobia in his later years.  To the point where he didn?t/couldn?t work and never left the house, not even for my parent?s wedding in 1958.  Other than family and the occasional visitor, amateur radio was his only contact with other people.  What?s sad is today?s medicine/medical treatment most likely could have gone a long way towards helping him.

I?m glad I was able to bring back some memories

Hi fellow members,

I just purchased an AnyTone AT-D878UVII Plus from another ham on QRZ.com.
Both of my laptops indicate an error when connecting the radio to them with
my Kenwood-style 2-pin passthrough USB cable. I'm looking for someone
nearby who may have an 878 and a cable they know is working so I can test
my radio with it and my PC? I simply want to confirm it connects and can be
read by the CPS. I'm ordering another cable but it's not going to be in
until next week and if I have to claim that the radio is broken I'd rather
do that ASAP.

For anyone looking for an inexpensive laptop computer, take a look at RTR Computers in Lawrence, MA. They sell computers returned from corporate leases for very reasonable prices. If you sign up for their mailing list you?ll get first notification of their latest batch of computers.

When I do POTAs I use an inexpensive laptop, dedicated to ham radio, for logging so I don?t need to worry about the risk of bringing my expensive laptop and all of its data in the field.

Hi folks,

I picked up a Radio Shack PRO-107 at HamXposition (actually, my friend John
gave it to me as a bonus for buying some other hardware from him). It works
well on AA batteries, and I found out I can update it even though the RS
software as a doorknob is useless due to long-dead servers. The database
can be updated using Whistler scanner software which uses the same database
format. I've been listening to all kinds of funky stuff on this little
scanner.

I have, however, run into a wall trying to find the USB cable that also
serves as a charging cable if you use NiMH batteries. The docs say it is
Mini USB, but no, it is not. It's some weird mutation between Mini and
Micro USB.

Does anyone where I could find one of these cables? I tried the RS web
site, eBay, Amazon and Google Shopping. Nothing, no trace of it. ??

It would, except I just found out in an obscure post that the cable is not
a USB cable. It's USB-A on one end, but it has an RS-232 converted in the
middle and hence the non-standard connector on the radio end. The radio is
not a USB device.

So much for that. ?

The 710 is Yaesu's entry level SDR rig. The DX10 is their hybrid SDR
Superhet design. Both are fantastic rigs. The 10 is more feature rich and
has the Variable Capacitor (VC) tune preselector as the top model DX101 (D
or MP).  As far as antennas go, look at wire antennas such as an Off Center
Fed from Palomar Engineers or an End Fed Random Wire also from Palomar.
Better yet, trek up to Ham Radio Outlet in Salem NH and ask the folks up
there for advice. They're all hama too.

Ah, you are probably then looking for a USB TTL cable, also designated sometimes as a Console cable. Lots of them on Amazon or elsewhere. Be sure to use the correct voltage selection on the adapter (3.3v or 5v, they all have a jumper to select the V) otherwise you will  let out the magic smoke! Here is an example of one that use an FTDI (the desirable kind) chip

It would, except I just found out in an obscure post that the cable is not a USB cable. It's USB-A on one end, but it has an RS-232 converted in the middle and hence the non-standard connector on the radio end. The radio is not a USB device.

Hi folks, 

 

I picked up a Radio Shack PRO-107 at HamXposition (actually, my friend John gave it to me as a bonus for buying some other hardware from him). It works well on AA batteries, and I found out I can update it even though the RS software as a doorknob is useless due to long-dead servers. The database can be updated using Whistler scanner software which uses the same database format. I've been listening to all kinds of funky stuff on this little scanner.

 

I have, however, run into a wall trying to find the USB cable that also serves as a charging cable if you use NiMH batteries. The docs say it is Mini USB, but no, it is not. It's some weird mutation between Mini and Micro USB.

Does anyone where I could find one of these cables? I tried the RS web site, eBay, Amazon and Google Shopping. Nothing, no trace of it. ??

 Hi Jay,

Congrats on the upgrade of your license! The first question to answer is your budget. I myself own both the Yaesu FT-710 AESS version and FTDX10 along with the FTDX101D HF Radios. All three radios are very good, The FTDX101D being the best. As other parties have stated the FT-710 AESS is Yaesu only True SDR Radio. Simpler to the Icom 7300. If your budget allows the FTDX10 is the way to go. It has a great receive section, second only to the FTDX!01D/MP.
Either radio takes time to adjust both with the receive and transmit. but when done to your liking you will enjoy either radio. The FT-710 AESS, I have the external speaker mounted on the right of the radio and with the AESS feature you can get a great balance between the internal and external speaker. The FTDX10 I run a pair of good quality computer speakers which can give a nice FM sound.

Also, correction to info on the FTDX10, This Radio does not have the VC Tune feature as the FTDX101 Serie Radios. The VC Tune is a variable capacitor for adjusting a receive filter bring the FTDX101 to the next level!

Congrats on the upgrade to Extra Class! I have the FTDX10 and I love it! It is a great radio at a great price point, and it is #3 on the Sherwood Engineering list for receivers! I've participated in this event for the last 2 years.? As Terry says 
below, it is a low pressure event and it addresses one of the basic 
tenets of Amateur Radio, Public Service.

All you need is an HT (I think they do have loaners if you don't have 
one) and a comfy jacket as it can be a bit chilly on an early October 
morning.? So come out and meet some fellow hams, mingle with folks that 
have FAR too much energy for that hour of the morning and taken in the 
pumpkin spice tinged air!

Second request.... still looking for volunteers.

This year's Baystate Marathon and Half-Marathon race is scheduled for Sunday
October 20, 2024.

Amateur Radio operators have been asked once again to support the Baystate
Marathon and Half Marathon. This year the event is on Sunday, October 20th.
Our operational time period is from approximately 0700 until event
completion (estimated 1400). Our assistance has been requested by Lowell
Office of Emergency Management and Lowell Fire Department. The
communications team will be employing Amateur Radio to provide this
communications asset.

Amateur Radio will be used for:
* Accountability Net: the purpose of this net is to coordinate with a race
public information booth the status of runners who are unable to complete
the race for any issue to any one is seeking this information.

Please contact me if you can assist or would like more information.

Please share with others that may be interested. This is a pretty laid

Greetings BARSians, (Yeah, I just made that up)

I've had a fascination with RTTY (radio teletype) since my earliest 
exposure to amateur radio.? Everything about it screamed SciFi movie to 
me!? The mysterious tones, the CRT display with crossed ellipses that 
reacted to tuning and of course the hulking Model 33 teleprinter nosily 
printing away!? A few decades have passed since then and most of that 
has evolved into a few simple devices (sometimes no devices at all!) you 
hook between your computer and your radio.? It can be a bit fiddly at 
first, but once you get going it is quite addictive.

There is a major RTTY contest coming up next weekend.? There will be 
MANY RTTY stations on the bands so lots of activity to test your setup 
or make a few QSOs.

I've copied a Zoom invite to a new talk that will introduce you to RTTY 
and provide pointers on how you can get yourself on the air with the 
'original digital mode'!? The YCCC (Yankee Clipper Contest Club) is a 
local group that focuses on the contesting aspect of our hobby.? BARS' 
own Ken, WO1N, is the current president of the YCCC.

(And before someone chimes in about CW, no, it doesn't count as 
'digital'. ;-) )

I tried contacting the net last night but got no response, I could hear
everyone fine. I don't know if I have my settings correct.

I have a Yaetsu FT-65 with a Diamond Antenna SRJ77CA on it. I live in
Middleton if that helps

Hi Steve,

There was some QRM last night and I thought I heard some stations trying to
check in but it was all static. I did ask for folks to try again but I'm
sorry we missed you. Assuming you have successfully used the WB1GOF
repeater in the past, it was likely the interference. If you haven't made a
QSO through WB1GOF, I'd suggest you throw out your callsign and ask for
someone to confirm you are making it into the repeater. There is
usually someone listening.

The W2SZ crew sets up the following for a VHF contest.

- 40 ft tower with 2x 11 element stack for 220
- 40 ft tower with 2x 14 element stack for 432, 6 element vertical yagi 
for 432 FM and an 432 omni
- 60 ft rotating tower with 4ft dish for 2, 3, 5 & 10 Gig
- 60 ft tower with 4ft dish for 902 & 1296
- 40 ft tower with 4x 14 element stack for 2 meters
- 40 ft tower with 2x 6 element stack for 6 meters
- 15 ft push up with 2x 3 element stack for 6 meters? (mostly receive)

Setup starts on Weds night or Thursday AM and goes right up to the 2PM 
start on Saturday.? Tear down takes ALL of Monday.? When they leave 
there is nothing left behind.

They do this twice a year. ;-)

I can hear everyone most of the time but when I transmit I am not getting
through. I have called QSO a few times over the last 2 days to no response.

Wondering if I am not hitting the repeater as I live in Middleton or do I
have something programmed wrong.

On another note, I do have an echolink but I am unable to find the station,
any help there would be great.

Echolink is down for WB1GOF

From Middleton, it might depend on exactly where you are there.   An HT to the WB1GOF repeater in Westford is a bit of a reach, even with an aftermarket antenna and a super advantageous position.  Mount Wachusett's is not in Middleton ?

Good evening! I hope this email finds you well. If you are using the stock
rubber duck antenna, I would recommend getting a high gain dual band
antenna, such as the Comet SMA 24. However, even that might not be enough,
as I can hit Westford in Haverhill with an HT  but I hit it better with my
Smiley antennas half wave 2m antenna, however I still have to put it in the
sweet spot. In your area the North Reading, Danvers, Toosfield, Wenham, and
Andover repeaters are the ones you are most likely to be good into only
using an HT.

My email client shows this as a confusing jumble. I think what you have is
correct, but I would change whatever is 100.0 Hz to 74.4 Hz.

You need 74.4 Hz on transmit to get into the repeater. You can optionally
require it on receive because the repeater also transmits a 74.4 Hz tone.
There is another repeater on 146.955 on Cape Cod which you might hear
otherwise when propagation is good:

I *think* you have 74.4 for transmit which is what you need, and 100.0 for
receive which is wrong but irrelevant if ?T-Tone? is used? Just want to
make sure it?s not the other way around, because a 100.0 Hz tone won?t open

Compared to your HT?s 5ish Watts, you will hear it a lot better than it
hears you.

I agree with what others said; a better/higher antenna can make a big
difference, and you might benefit from trying some repeaters closer to you
to confirm all is well with your radio, if you haven?t already. There are 2
Meter repeaters with good range in North Reading (KC1US), Topsfield
(N1HSY), and Danvers (NS1RA).

For what it?s worth I live in Lowell and use a 50W mobile radio in the
shack to get into the Westford repeater. I wouldn?t expect great results
from my QTH (which is at a low elevation) from an HT.

You know what frustrates me? All the people who mouth off on the Internet
about how easily they installed their dipole antennas like the Cobra
Ultralite, then move on to show off their technobabble of how they
connected it to their radio. NO ONE has made a video that covers the ENTIRE
process of hanging such an antenna. This is about as bad as all the people
who treat new HAMs like they should have been born already knowing all the
acronym-o-babble in the HAM radio slang, especially all the q-codes.

Combine that with the fact that if you ask 50 HAMs what is their favorite
antenna, you will get 50 completely different answers, most of them with
contradicting arguments.... <sigh>

I've always had a hard time with the dB scale. I new that it was 
logarithmic (exponential) rather than linear but that was about it.? 
This video does a reasonable job of explaining the basics, including the 
difference between dBi, dBm and dBd.

BTW, to convert dBm to watts, divide the dBm value by 10. calculate 10 
to that power, divide this value by 1000 to get the power in watts.? For 
example, 50dBm: (50/10) = 5, (10^5) = 100,000, ( 100,000/1,000 ) = 100 
watts.? If I understand dB correctly you could skip the last step by 
subtracting 3 from the result in the first step.? So 10/5 = 5, 5-3=2, 
10^2=100.

There's always a human behind the PC. The software that lets you transmit
and receive the messages does not allow unattended use. Someone always has

Is FT8 for everyone?? Of course not.? But neither is CW, or RTTY, or 
SSTV, or rag chewing, or VHF, or satellites, or POTA, or 
name-your-favorite-mode/activity.? The beautiful genius of our hobby is 
that there is a cornucopia of ways to enjoy it!

The reason FT8 is popular is because you can do QSO's at power levels that
would be dang near impossible with CW or other variations of the hobby. The
way the software extracts data from faint signals is almost magic.

I have made contacts around the world, even as far as a ship way north of
Siberia, with my FT-840 turned down to just 20 watts of power. I'm sure
other club members have similar stories.

Hi BARS friends,

I?ve owned this FT-847 for a long time. It has served as a lightly-used
secondary radio for my office and for occasional VHF/UHF weak signal
operations. A few years ago, I installed a satellite array (courtesy fellow
BARS member Miles and enjoyed many QSOs with this rig.

The rig is working FB. It looks great. I?d like to see it go to a new owner
who will get as much enjoyment out of it as I have over the years.

I built a homebrew loop out of about pi meters of 12 ga house wire and a
4:1 balun.  I based it on an article about small antennae for receive by
Steve Best.  No tuner,  I only use it for receive.  It works okay, not
great, but it is compact.

The antenna you mentioned seems to get reasonable reviews.  So, worth a
shot!

articles, there is no newsletter. If you have something you'd like to

This Wednesday, 10/2, is our monthly membership meeting. It looks like this
month's meeting will be via Zoom only at 7 pm EST. Be on the lookout for
Zoom info from Bruce over the next couple of days. This month's guest
speaker will be Terry Dennison, K9TAD, on Sunspots and Radio Propagation.
Be sure to check out this month's newsletter or w1hh.org for more info on
Terry and his presentation.

As a reminder, BARS dues run from January 1 through December 31. Dues are
just $15 for the year and help pay for the club Zoom account, the website,
Field Day activities, etc. If you have not renewed, you can do so online at
