As he progressed through the amateur ranks he was active in all the usual ham activities such as AREC, traffic, etc.. At the same time he worked DX when he could with limited antennas and equipment. By the mid-60s he found more satisfaction in DXing and eventually put most of his time and effort into DX. Tom pursued DX all during his early years and by the early 70s had obtained his General and Advanced level license thus giving him more privileges and at the same time increasing his country totals to over 200 worked. By now he was also gainfully employed and had a family. In 1981, with a lifelong dream of living in Alaska, he was selected for a position in Alaska and the family moved North to the interior of Alaska and AL7EL was born! For two years he operated as AL7EL and experienced DX from the other side which provided experience only gained from “being DX”. At the conclusion of his tour, he returned to the lower 48 and continued his career in Maryland, Georgia and New York. In 1996 he retired and established his residence in Northeast Georgia and remains there to this day. When he retired he established a consulting firm providing services to the US Army worldwide. Tom has visited 46 countries with radio operations from 24 of those. He currently holds ARRL DXCC Honor Roll No. 1 with a country count of 367/340; 9-band DXCC; 5-band Worked all Zones and numerous other DXCC achievements. In 2009 Tom was inducted into the CQ DX Hall of Fame. Among the many countries visited and/or operated from, Tom has participated in DXpeditions to rare places such as Scarborough Reef, Kingman Reef, Midway Atoll, Wake Island, East Malaysia and North Cook Island. Most recently operations were from Sao Tome and Principe, Mozambique and Svalbard. Most all operations were either as Team Leader/Operator and also usually as a member of management teams for virtually all locations traveled to.. Tom as with most DXpepedtions always has one thing on their mind…. *”Where are we going next”!* -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Events trample over my best laid plans and dreams. My godson and very close big brother to my son is getting married in Argentina. That means I need to raise funds for airfare, and the best piece of test equipment I own needs to go. For sale is a Motorola R2001-D/HS (D model with high stability oscillator option). It is in excellent working condition after putting a lot of TLC into it. No diagnostics errors, clear CRT with working focus and intensity ports and a totally refurbished battery pack with factory new cells that powers the unit for some 50 minutes (continually charges and maintains while plugged to AC power). Comes with a number of probes and connector adapters, a collapsible antenna, power cable, a set of extender boards for use if you have to troubleshoot one of the internal boards, the operator manual and service manual, all nicely spiral-bound by Staples, and other doodads. :) If you missed the email I sent when I first bought it, this thing is a beast. I have since spoken to several techs who say this is the all-in-one piece of test equipment they use for all their work. - AM/FM/CW/SSB Monitor - AM/FM/CW/DSBSC Generate Signaling Simulator - Spectrum Analyzer - Duplex Generator - Memory Tables - Frequency Counter - Digital Voltmeter - Wattmeter - IF Display - Oscilloscope - Signal Strength Meter - SINAD/Distortion Meter It was owned by the US Coast Guard before I bought it and does have a calibration sticker, though it is dated. i drove two days to PA and back to pick it up rather than risk having a dumba** trucker destroy it in transit. I think it was made for the military specifically to give them a shop-in-a-box that could do it all in the field and be charged by a generator. I can't find any listings for this unit in this condition. I am asking $2500, but I am flexible if the buyer is a club member. If it doesn't sell here in a week or two it goes on fleaBay. 73, K1CPR Juan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Bruce W1LUS ________________________________ From: Larry Dennis Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2025 9:53 PM To: w1lus at hotmail.com Subject: RTTY Bruce, I have been a ham radio operator for decades with the call sign KS3H since about 1983. My initial call sign was WN2IGE earned in NJ with my advanced license of WB5DCC. I spent my first career in the USAF and thus had several different call signs as we moved every four years. Two of my college friends taught me Morse code and gave me the exam for the Novice license. When I joined the Air Force we moved to Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, NM where I joined the Base Amateur Radio Club (K5FIQ) and went to my first Field Day on top of Capillo Peak at about 11,000 feet up. I have been an active ham of varying time spent operating, depending upon what was going on with family, work, etc. Most every year I have been lucky enough to be able to do Field Day in various places around the US. I currently livee in Daleville, VA, near Roanoke, VA in southwest Virginia. Covid changed that in many ways for me. Other than FD, I was never a contester nor did I chase DX. I was fortunate to be able to buy a used (practically new) ICOM 7700 in June 2020. Since we didn't interact with many people in person during Covid, I started doing PSK31 first and then RTTY and begun doing a number of RTTY contests with an occasional CW, SSB and a rare PSK31 test. Since 2020 I have made 15,000 QSOs, most all of them are from contests (now some via FT-8), have gotten DXCC with just RTTY and have 187 confirmed countries. Very fortunate. I have a friend (NIFZM) who lives in Chelmsford who is trying to work RTTY but has had little success. I have been trying to help him (from a distance in Virginia), but I am not familiar with the program he's using for RTTTy—Ham Radio Deluxe. The reason I am writing this is that I was wondering if there is anyone in the club who might be able to provide him with some assistance. Interestingly I gave him his Novice exam many years ago. I am sending this to you since I didn't any club contact information except for you. I would appreeciate any information/assistance. I attached a picture of my QSL card (the proof). This is my other passion. This was taken on top of Crawford Mountain and is where we (both my brothers are hams) operate Field Day. It is also where we launch hang gliders and paragliders. My station is rather simple. ICOM 7700. No linear amplifier. Two G5RV's about 25-30 feet in the air and perpendicular to each other. One home brewed single wire 20 meter beam which is supposed to provide some gain and directivity (from an old QST article). Interestingly with the 7700 built in antenna tuner, I can usually use it on 10, 12, 15, 17, 20 and some on 30 meters. Not ideal, but not bad. I am in the middle of the SARTY contest this weekend. Anyway, I didn't mean to make this so long. I would appreciate any assistance or advice. Thank you. 73 73 KS3H Larry Dennis [cid:8be4b366-db69-45c6-b34e-27ad9aa99700] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... They also suggested a "button" to send an email to the list on the main page of the website. I am still working on a good design for something like that; however, I did add a page about the email list and it may have some helpful information for any of you, especially if it's been a while since you subscribed and received the "welcome" email that had some of this info. For future reference, you can find the page in 2 clicks on the website, under "ABOUT" and then "BARS EMAIL LIST". To save you time, I'll include both the direct link below as well as a copy of the content itself. If you have any suggestions for edits or information that is missing, just let me know! https://www.w1hh.org/about/bars-email-list/ Dave - KC1TLF BARS Email List Do you want to hear about upcoming events and meetings first? Do you want to communicate with other BARS subscribers and members? Do you want a way to ask questions of experienced local amateurs? You can sign up to subscribe to the BARS emails list. You do not have to be a member of the club as the list is open to everyone but, of course, we’d love to have you join! You’ll get notices about upcoming events and meetings and emails from other subscribers that may include valuable resources, questions, items for sale, or just general discussions. There are usually 30-60 messages a month, so it won’t fill your inbox. Subscribing to the List To subscribe to the email list you have two easy options: 1. Send an email to bars-subscribe at w1hh.org and then click the link in the email you’ll receive back to confirm your subscription. You are now subscribed. 2. Visit the list management page at https://mail.w1hh.org/mailman/listinfo/bars_w1hh.org and enter your email. You can optionally set a password, which will allow you to manage your subscription and view the list of subscribers. After submitting, click the link in the email you’ll receive to confirm your subscription. You are now subscribed. This link is at the bottom of every email you’ll get from the list as well, so it’s easy to manage your subscription. Sending Messages to the List Once you are subscribed, you can simply send an email to bars at w1hh.org and your message will be sent to all the subscribers. If you get an email from the list, you can just reply and it should automatically reply to bars at w1hh.org, so everyone gets your reply. It’s that easy! Viewing the Archive Want to find an old message? Maybe you lost it in your inbox, or you want to see something from before you subscribed. Anyone can access the BARS Archive at http://mail.w1hh.org/pipermail/bars_w1hh.org/ and browse through all the messages by date, thread, subject, or author. Managing your Subscription If you want to manage your subscription, you can use the info page at http://mail.w1hh.org/mailman/listinfo/bars_w1hh.org to update your settings, set a password, reset your password, or view the list of subscribers.
