Interesting piece about machine learning (the correct name for the "AI"
marketing concept). My take on how ML can influence activities like our own
is in automation of pattern recognition and reaction to what we hear and
observe on our radios.
For example, has anyone thought about programming a CW interface between a
HAM radio and ChatGPT? If a computer can decode CW, it should also work as
a go-between between that and many other similar resources on the internet.
One of the things ChatGPT can do is create a text-based game in the spirit
of the Infocom series (think Zork, Suspended or Hitchiker's Guide to the
Galaxy). Those games have interfaces to which you talk just as you would
talk to a human. It can create an entire universe of a game for you, but
one of the things it does not do well is create horror themes or stories. I
tried asking it for a game based on Ridley Scott's "Alien" movie but
ChatGPT seemed unable to create monsters. I spent hours playing two games
it created, and it was a heck of a lot more interesting than CW'ing to
people about their trip to the barn. :)
ML can also help with all those repetitive activities in HAM radio that can
be automated, but require pattern matching to make decisions, such as
tuning of an antenna.
The concept of a personal Elmer who is available 24x7 and never tires of
answering your questions is a very real one in ChatGPT.
I use ChatGPT at work for one purpose, helping me gather and summarize
information to suggest answers to complex technical questions. It is
exactly the same thing I would do manually with Google searches, but it can
search many more sources simultaneously at blazing speeds, much faster than
my fat Puerto Rican redneck fingers can type. Just remember: "ChatGPT can
make mistakes." Says so at the bottom of every initial screen.
