Time: Dec 3, 2025, 07:00 PM Topic: “Fun With QRP” Speaker: John Meade, W2XS QRP means low-power amateur radio operation, with 5 watts or less for CW and digital modes, and 10 watts or less for SSB. John will be presenting a talk on "Fun With QRP". You won't want to miss this one! John is an avid QRP Operator in Northport, New York. Here is John's Bio: My main rig is the Elecraft K4D with the KPA500 and KAT500. I really enjoy the smooth QSK and quick QSY of the system. The K4D is a wonderful radio, and I am enjoying it very much. I have a K1, K2, KX1, KX2, KX3, SST40, OHR HP40, QCX mini, and NC40A for QRP use. The paddles I prefer are the Elecraft Hex-Key, the Brown Brothers Model BTL-A, and, for QRP, the Black Widow, Paddlette PK-1, Vibroplex Code Warrior, and K9LU Bulldog paddles, all of which have a nice feel. The antenna is a center-fed 135-foot multiband doublet ("zepp") fed with KW 300-ohm ladder line through a Balun Designs Tuner Balun. I enjoy CW operating, QRP, and restoring and using boat anchors. I started out in traffic handling and still like to QNI into nets. My brother is WA2DSF and is using the K2 in Florida. Unfortunately, he is in a place with antenna restrictions, so the antenna so far is an indoor loop. His 2-meter HT is working, though. As someone who has had a similar experience (sans radio equipment), I would take pictures of everything. Make sure to take many close-up pics as well, showing lack of mold or rust (or other moisture issues). Check all walls and ceilings in the whole house for small cracks, which may get larger over time. Ensure that your roof is repaired with the same ventilation as it had before, including plumbing vent pipes and soffits. Unfortunately, small corners that are cut now may cause bigger problems later. I used Greenleaf for the tree removal ( https://www.facebook.com/greenleafstreeservice/), but it looks like Rich sold his tree service business. It may be worth calling him anyway, 978-888-1715. His crew did an amazing job. The cost to get the equipment there was incredibly expensive, which insurance covered, but I took advantage of him being there to take other trees down that were future risks at a great price. Message-ID: I just saw this new "game" on the Live Free and Ham video. It's an FT8 battle that anyone can compete in by sending their FT8 logs to the FT8 Battle Royal tracker. It's still early days, but it works. I've already started earning points. Some FT8/FT4 folks in the club may be interested. Essentially, you earn points for making FT8/FT4 contacts, with bonuses awarded for contacts on multiple bands and modes. Plus, you can "steal" points from someone else for making a contact with a station they got points for, and you can lose points if you make a duplicate contact! The opportunity to get points resets every day at 0000 UTC. Details are at https://www.ft8battle.com/ How it works is at https://www.ft8battle.com/how-it-works.php Rules are at https://www.ft8battle.com/rules.php My stats are at https://www.ft8battle.com/overlays/player-stats.html?callsign=KC1TLF [image: image.png] 73, Dave KC1TLF -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I was an activator for this event last year, and I'll be doing it again this year.  There is no set schedule for activtators, you simply get hope on when you have some time, check which band & mode is available on the website and have fun!  You don't need a superstation - I was running digital modes from my "100w and a wire" potato station and made tons of contacts. There is no complicated exchange, simply put the callers in your log.  There is a bit of setup to install the app that posts the contacts in real-time to the event website.  If you are running N1MM you already have most of what you need. I'm happy to answer any questions, direct or on-list, or you can reach out to John directly (address below) to become an activator. 73 Tim/K1DC -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [yccc] World Wide Award January 2026 - N1W Resent-Date: Fri, 05 Dec 2025 09:55:51 -0800 Resent-From: john at johnevanson.com Date: Fri, 5 Dec 2025 12:55:38 -0500 From: WJ1U - John via groups.io Reply-To: john at johnevanson.com To: yccc - groups.io Hey everyone!  It's getting close to the January World Wide Award (https://hamaward.cloud/wwa), which, if you are not familiar, is an operating event that runs the whole month of January where chasers try to make contacts with as many of the special calls as they can each day.  Randy, K5ZD, used to organize the special call for 1-land (N1W), but since he has moved away to 8-land, he has passed the torch to me and John, NN1SS. Being an activator is a lot of fun and is also great practice for running pileups in the contests.  The event features real-time logging through hamaward.cloud, which requires some minimal setup to make it work with your favorite logging program (most of the major contest loggers are supported), and then you just get on the air from your station and run guys, logging them as normal. To avoid any last-minute setup stress, there's a period before the event starts where a test instance of the software is running and you can make sure you've got everything operating properly. The event is on 80 through 10 meters (including the WARC bands) using CW, SSB, or Digi (FT8/FT4/RTTY/PSK), so there's a lot of flexibility on what band/mode you want to operate on. Chasers can work special calls once per day per band/mode, creating a lot of potential activity.  The software keeps track of where your fellow N1W operators are located (one per band/mode combo at a time), making it easy to coordinate without complex scheduling ahead of time. N1W is looking just for people who are operating from 1-land (there are other special calls for some of the other areas).  It would be great if you are able to do at least a few hours a week, but there's no big commitment needed, and as mentioned there's no fixed, up-front schedule you have to follow.  I did this event last year with my modest 100W & a wire station and still enjoyed lots of fun pileups, so you don't need to be a big gun to participate either. If you are interested in being an N1W activator, please let me know, and I will get you signed up! 73, John WJ1U _._,_._,_ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
