Below is your link to the ZOOM portion of the BARS November 5, at 7:00 PM, Meeting. Topic: BARS Monthly Meeting on November 5 at 7:00 PM – “The Various Digital Modes” Speaker: Jeffrey Schmidt, N5MNW Time: Nov 5, 2025 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Jeff's Bio: Jeffrey Schmidt, N5MNW, from Round Rock, TX., will give a presentation entitled "The Various Digital Modes." Here is Jeff's BIO: I've always been fascinated by Radio. Signal propagation and the "inner workings" have held my interest and helped my career immensely. Currently, I work in the Semiconductor Industry as an Engineering Technician, performing electrical evaluations of the "nuts and bolts" of Integrated Circuits. I'm constantly consulted by my peers as one who can pull the drapery away from an electrical problem and help everyone understand the issues. I think it's because of Ham Radio and the experimentation it encourages. The Austin Amateur Radio Club has been offering Ham license classes for several decades. My wife, Lori- KM5MQ, and I are involved with the coordination and instruction of all levels of Ham Radio Licenses. It's quite rewarding to see a past student get fired up about things like Digital Modes, Emergency response, ARES, or some other aspect of Ham Radio and do positive things with their privileges. Of course, one of the places I got to see while on board was the radio room. In it, I saw a display of an amateur radio activation during International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend (ILLW). Speaking with my tour guide (and later the man who bought the ship for $1, is refurbishing the ship, and opened it as a museum), I learned that it has been quite a while since it was activated. They expressed great interest in having it activated again. The display had the callsign W1NLS on the board. I looked it up, and it is the "Nantucket Amateur Radio Club" callsign. LotW says no QSO data have been uploaded for this callsign since August of 2019 (August is when ILLW is), so it has been at least six years since it was activated. I'm considering activating it in 2026, but would rather not be the only operator. Is anyone else interested in broadcasting from a museum lightship in Boston Harbor? In this month's ARRL Letter I noticed that they have added an option for GMRS license holders to show their support using the same processes as well. I also hold a GMRS license (WRYP866) and so I send additional letters to my senators and congresswoman. I doubt they will remember my amateur radio letter, but I figure the more letters they get the better. I wanted to share this in case you missed it and would like to do the same. Below is the excerpt from The ARRL Letter with the links to for both amateur radio operators and GMRS operators. 73, Dave KC1TLF -------------- *ARRL is calling on all radio amateurs and GRMS licensees to join our nationwide grassroots campaign to pass the Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act*. ARRL has made it very easy to send your letters to Congress. Hams should go to *https://send-a-letter.org/HOA * and GMRS users should go to *https://send-a-letter.org/GMRS *. The letters will automatically be sent to your elected officials encouraging them to support the bipartisan bills. Passage would give amateur radio operators the same rights to install antennas on their property as those enjoyed by users of TV antennas, wireless internet, and flagpoles. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Hedy Kiesler was 19 years old and starring in "Ecstasy," a Czech film that featured cinema's first on-screen female orgasm. Scandalized conservatives called her a whore. Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels banned the film. But Friedrich Mandl, one of Austria's wealthiest arms dealers, saw something else. He married her-and then imprisoned her. Mandl was a fascist who sold weapons to Hitler and Mussolini. He locked Hedy in his castle, dressed her up for dinner parties with Nazi officials, and forbade her to act. She was his trophy wife, his beautiful possession, forced to sit through endless business meetings where fascist arms dealers discussed military technology. But here's what Mandl didn't realize: Hedy was listening. And Hedy was brilliant. While her husband and his Nazi clients discussed torpedoes, radio frequencies, and military communications, Hedy Kiesler was absorbing every word. She understood the technology. She saw the problems. And she started thinking about solutions. In 1937, Hedy escaped. She drugged her maid, stole her clothes, fled to Paris, and then to London. Louis B. Mayer, the head of MGM Studios, saw her and offered a contract. She sailed to America, changed her name to Hedy Lamarr, and became a Hollywood star. The world saw a stunning actress. Time magazine called her "the most beautiful woman in the world." She appeared in films like "Algiers" and "Samson and Delilah," her face on movie posters across America. But Hedy's brain was somewhere else. She was thinking about the Nazis. About the war. About the technology she'd heard discussed in Mandl's castle. She knew that radio-controlled torpedoes could be jammed by the enemy, making them useless. If you transmitted a signal on a single frequency, the enemy could detect it and disrupt it. Torpedoes would veer off course. Ships would be safe. But what if the signal kept changing frequencies? What if it "hopped" from one frequency to another in a pattern only the transmitter and receiver knew? The enemy couldn't jam what they couldn't predict. In 1940, Hedy met composer George Antheil at a dinner party. They started talking about music. Then about technology. Then about synchronized player pianos-how they could play in perfect synchronization using perforated paper rolls. And Hedy had an idea. What if you could use that same principle to synchronize radio frequencies? The transmitter and receiver could hop between 88 different frequencies (she chose 88 because that's the number of keys on a piano) in perfect sync, making the signal impossible to jam or intercept. Together, Hedy and George developed the concept. They called it "frequency hopping." In 1942, they were granted U.S. Patent 2,292,387 for a "Secret Communication System." They donated it to the U.S. Navy, hoping it would help defeat the Nazis. The Navy rejected it. Some accounts say they dismissed it because Hedy was "just an actress." Others say the technology was ahead of its time. Whatever the reason, the Navy shelved the patent and told Hedy she could better serve the war effort by selling war bonds. So she did. Hedy Lamarr raised $25 million for the war effort by auctioning kisses and appearing at rallies. The world celebrated her beauty while ignoring her brain. Her patent expired in 1959, unused and forgotten. But in the 1960s, military engineers rediscovered frequency-hopping technology. They used it in Navy ships during the Cuban Missile Crisis. They used it in secure military communications. By the 1980s and '90s, frequency hopping became the foundation for: Wi-Fi Bluetooth GPS All modern wireless communication Every time you connect to Wi-Fi, you're using technology Hedy Lamarr invented in 1941. But for decades, she got no credit. No royalties. No recognition. In 1997-56 years after her patent-the Electronic Frontier Foundation finally gave Hedy Lamarr the Pioneer Award, acknowledging her contribution to wireless technology. She was 83 years old. She'd been ignored for more than half a century while her invention changed the world. When she received the award, Hedy said: "It's about time." Hedy Lamarr died in 2000 at age 85. For most of her life, she was remembered as "the beautiful actress." Her technological genius was dismissed, forgotten, or credited to men. Today, her face is on currency in Austria. Her patent is recognized as foundational to modern technology. And every smartphone, every GPS device, every Bluetooth connection exists because a woman the world dismissed as "just a pretty face" was actually one of the most important inventors of the 20th century. She escaped a Nazi arms dealer's castle. She became a Hollywood icon. And she invented technology that now runs the modern world. But for most of her life, people only wanted to talk about how beautiful she was. Hedy Lamarr's story isn't just about underestimated genius-it's about how society treats brilliant women. How we reduce them to their appearance. How we ignore their contributions. How we credit men while erasing women. The U.S. Navy told her to sell war bonds with her beauty instead of using her brain to win the war. Then they secretly used her invention anyway. That's not just sexism. That's theft. Every time you use Wi-Fi, remember: a Hollywood actress who the world called "just a pretty face" made it possible. And she did it while trying to defeat the Nazis who'd threatened her, imprisoned her, and tried to reduce her to a decoration in a castle. Hedy Lamarr didn't just escape. She won. In honor of Hedy Lamarr (1914-2000), whose beauty the world celebrated but whose genius the world tried to erase. 73 de ws1m bammi -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Then they secretly used her invention anyway. That's not just sexism. That's theft." That is an amazing story. Hedy Lamarr clearly was a brilliant and beautiful woman. But in defense of the U.S. Navy, they didn't use her idea until after her patient had expired. That is not theft. Expired patients are free game. As for using her invention "secretly", well of course they would use it secretly. All military technology is developed secretly, especially during the 1960's during the cold war. The idea of frequency hopping that Lamarr and Antheil came up with is of course very important. But, as with all other technological advancements, there would have been hundreds of other engineering problems that needed to be solved in order to produce a working device. Did we have all those solutions in the early 40's? Certainly 20 years later the U.S. Military had access to technology that didn't exist when Hedy first approached the Navy with her idea. And even after they started looking into it in the early 60's it took many years and many other great minds to produce useful tech like WiFi and GPS from it. It makes for a better story to imagine that a beautiful actress handed the Navy a working prototype and they rejected it. But I think the truth is more in line with she handed them a great idea that they either didn't have the time, technology or imagination (probably all three) to develop it into a useful weapon at that point. Also, it should be noted that George Antheil, the co-inventor, was also not credited for the frequency hopping idea until 1997 when he got the Pioneer Award at the same time as Hedy Lamarr. Was he ignored because of sexism as well? Sorry for the delay. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! 73, Doug N1WRN I am please to announce that our Guest Speaker for the December 3, 2025 Club Meeting will be John Meade, W2XS, and he will be presenting a talk on "Fun With QRP". You won't want to miss this one! John is an avid QRP Operator in Northport, New York. Here is John's Bio: LICW Club #53, CWOPS #1407, CFO #201, ARCI #10275, NAQCC #655, SKCC #2200, A1 OP, Larkfield ARC My main rig is the Elecraft K4D with the KPA500 and KAT500. I really enjoy the smooth QSK and quick QSY of the system. The K4D is a wonderful radio, and I am enjoying it very much. I have a K1, K2, KX1, KX2, KX3, SST40, OHR HP40, QCX mini, and NC40A for QRP use. The paddles that I prefer are the Elecraft Hex-Key, the Brown Brothers Model BTL-A, and, for QRP, I also use the Black Widow, Paddlette PK-1, the Vibroplex Code Warrior, and K9LU Bulldog paddles, all of which have a nice feel to them. The antenna is a center-fed 135-foot multiband doublet ("zepp") fed with KW 300-ohm ladder line through a Balun Designs Tuner Balun. I enjoy CW operating, QRP, and restoring and using boatanchors. I started out in traffic handling and still like to QNI into nets. My brother is WA2DSF and is using the K2 in Florida. Unfortunately, he is in a place with antenna restrictions, so the antenna so far is an indoor loop. His 2 meter HT is working, though. > On 11/24/2025 8:47 AM EST Marla Wallace via bars wrote: > > > The deadline for the December newsletter is noon today. > _______________________________________________ > bars mailing list > bars at w1hh.org > http://mail.w1hh.org/mailman/listinfo/bars_w1hh.org > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The FD rules allow folks that choose to work from home to contribute their scores to a club call.  This year Nori, AA1NK and Ken, WO1N worked the event as single ops from home and added their points to the club by indicating their club affiliation in the log submitted to ARRL. See you in June! 73, Tim/K1DC On 11/26/2025 18:19, Christopher Lennon wrote: > I am STOKED for field day 2026.  On my calendar already. > > One question, how do the AA1NK and WO1N points figure in.  They were > obviously big contributors.  Were they remote in some way? > > Chris > W2BPL > > Sent from my phone. > > On Wed, Nov 26, 2025, 11:14 AM Tim - K1DC via bars wrote: > > Greetings BARSians!  (did I just make that up?) > > The ARRL have published the results of the 2025 Field Day 'event' > (It's not a contest - despite there being points and scores and > published rankings... ;-) ) > > 2025 was a transitional year for the BARS Field Day efforts.  > Thanks to the generosity of Nan Araway, NK1A, we had a new > location at her home in Chemlsford.  As expected, our score > reflected the unfamiliar QTH and new operating conditions.  A > quick summary is below and the full published results are on the > ARRL website here: > https://www.w1hh.org/what-is-field-day/field-day-results/ .   A > listing of past BARS FD scores is on the BARS website here: > https://www.w1hh.org/what-is-field-day/field-day-results/ and an > article by Mark, KA1INE, is posted here: > https://www.w1hh.org/what-is-field-day/bars-field-day-2025/ . > > * > * *W1HH* *AA1NK* *WO1N* *Club Total* > *CW contacts* 38 100 60 *198* > *SSB contacts* 75 0 0 *75* > *Digital contacts* 65 4 0 *69* > * > * > > > * > * > *Total contacts* 178 104 60 *342* > *Bonus points* 780 50 50 *880* > * > * > > > * > * > *Final Score* 1342 466 290 *2098* > > > Many thanks to Mark Nelson, KA1INE, for his work as FD coordinator > (aka 'cat wrangler')!  As I step into this role for 2026 I look > forward to cajoling each and every BARS member to participate in > this fun activity!  So as you drift off into that food coma in the > coming days ponder how you might maximize your fun next June > 26-27!   It's only 212 short days away! > > Thanks to our VP Dave, KC1TLF for grokking stats above from the > ARRL post. > > 73, > > Tim/K1DC > > -- > > Courageously sent from a non-Apple device that /includes/ a > headphone jack. > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > > > Tim Carter - K1DC > > > > +1.978.710.0133 > > k1dc.radio at gmail.com > > https://k1dc.com > > "Computers are incredibly fast, accurate and stupid; humans are > incredibly slow, inaccurate and brilliant; together they are > powerful beyond imagination." -- /Albert Einstein/ > > Warning: Spelling errors in this message are the product of a poor > school system. Here's the link for this month's newsletter posting: https://www.w1hh.org/december-2025-billerica-amateur-radio-society-newsletter/ This Wednesday, 12/3, is our monthly membership meeting. Note that the meetings are now hybrid and will take place at the Chelmsford Bible Church at 128 Gorham Street in Chelmsford AND via Zoom at 7 pm EST. *Please see the newsletter for important details about club topics to be discussed at this meeting and for the latest info about our holiday party.* I am pleased to announce that our Guest Speaker for the December 3, 2025 Club Meeting will be John Meade, W2XS, and he will be presenting a talk on "Fun With QRP". You won't want to miss this one! John is an avid QRP Operator in Northport, New York. For more information, please visit our website at https://w1hh.org where meeting announcements are posted. Dues are just $15 for the year and help pay for the club's Zoom account, the website, Field Day activities, etc. If you have not renewed, you can do so online at https://www.w1hh.org/join-or-renew/. If you're not sure if you are current or not, email our club treasurer, Bruce Anderson, at w1lus at hotmail.com. 73, Dave KC1TLF -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
