It was not easy. You are dealing with two different database maintained by the US Gummit and they clearly are running on circa 1990's IBM AS400's or something similar. There are no fees for administrative updates, such as a change of name, mailing or email address, modification applications to upgrade an amateur radio licensee’s operator class or to request a sequentially issued call sign. You can change your name anytime, as Ken described. can renew only 90 days (or later) before it expires. So maybe make it a two-step process. These resources were useful: Google To renew your amateur radio license, you must log in to the FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS) using your FCC Registration Number (FRN) and password, select "Renew Licenses," and follow the prompts to submit your application and pay the $35 fee through the CORES system. You can renew your license up to two years after it expires, but you cannot transmit during the grace period. Steps to Renew Online * Log in to the FCC ULS: Go to the FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS) website and log in with your FCC Registration Number (FRN) and password. * Navigate to "My Licenses": From the License Manager page, select the "My Licenses" link from the left-hand navigation menu. * Initiate the Renewal: On the "My Licenses" page, select the "Renew Licenses" link. * Select License(s): On the "Select Licenses" page, choose the license(s) you want to renew by clicking the "Add" button. * Complete the Application: Follow the on-screen prompts to update any necessary information and answer the required questions, including the felony question. * Pay the Renewal Fee: Submit the application and then pay the $35 renewal fee through the FCC's CORES (Commission Registration System). * Confirmation: You will receive a confirmation email, and your license status will be updated in the ULS system. * Important Information * Renewal Window: You can start the renewal process as early as 90 days before your license expires. * * Grace Period: Your license can be renewed for up to two years after its expiration date. * * ARRL Assistance: The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) offers services to help members with the renewal process. * * Expired License (More Than 2 Years): If your license has been expired for more than two years, you must take the Technician class exam again to regain your license, even if it's expired. You cannot renew more than 90 days before license expiration date. Upon FCC Renewl Action, You will get an email from the FCC requesting payment. You will be required to pay a $35.00 Application Fee by computer as mobile devices, cell phones and Tablets are not readily accepted as FCC programmers have yet to realize their shortcomings. 🤣 If you Pay by 5:00pm East Coast time, you will receive a second email normally 24-36 hour later with instructions on how to download and print a copy of your new license. Message-ID: I forgot to mention on the net tonight an event happening in Lowell that I believe a lot of folks would find interesting. The Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race is one of my favorite events of the year!  It is a race of all-terrain human powered sculptures. Yeah, that's a mouthful -- easier to visit their website to get a sample of the madness! https://www.lowellkinetic.com/ They race through the streets of Lowell, through a 'mud pit' and then more roads and eventually down a section of the Merrimack River before returning the start/finish line in Lowell.  The machines are shining examples of creative engineering with a huge dose of whimsy.  Most of the 16 teams are local but there are few visitors from other sculpture races in the country. I've had the pleasure of being a volunteer photographer for the event since it's inception.  It is incredible fun and will def. appeal to the engineers as well as the wide-eyed child in all of us.  You can see some of my images from last year's race here ( https://bit.ly/4gqdTTQ ) and here ( https://bit.ly/4mmJ97J ). I am pretty sure the 7300 has an internal sound card that should show up under soundcards. For my FT-710 I have a soundcard called "USB Audio Device" and two COM ports called "Silicon Labs Dual CP2105 USB to UART Bridge: Enhanced COM Port". This will be an indicator that your 7300 is talking to your computer. If you don't see the ports and soundcard (which may be different than mine), you are likely missing drivers. Once you confirm that, make sure your VarAC PTT, CAT, and Frequency Control settings are correct. With the FT-710, I just needed to select the right RIG under PTT and Frequency Control, then select the correct COM port under CAT. All the default settings worked otherwise. Since then, I did set the "read frequency every" to 5 seconds to slow it down because I was troubleshooting an issue but I think it was RF on my shield coming back into the rig. I just never changed that back. you can test the PTT within VarAC, but no tone will go out; that's okay. If your radio switches to TX you are good. In VARA HF make sure the correct sound cards are selected for the 7300. On my FT-710 the names are the same for input and output but they are properly identified as "microphone" and "headphone" outputs. Make sure your PC did not switch your default audio to your RIG; otherwise, if you are transmitting and you get a notification on your PC or play music or a video, it will send the sound out over the air. Press the red "tune" button in VARA HF and see if your rig switches to TX and shows a tone going out. Make sure your power is as low as it will go on the 7300. Good luck, Dave KC1TLF On Fri, Sep 26, 2025 at 12:46 PM Andy Wallace via bars wrote: > I have yet to do digital with mine but - did you install the Icom 7300 > drivers? > > https://www.icomjapan.com/support/firmware_driver/2417/ > > Andy > > > On Sep 26, 2025, at 12:28 PM, Ron Zeheb via bars wrote: > > > I am dipping my toes into digital mode for the first time, but having > difficulty setting up VarAC with my IC-7300. Calling a little high or low will differentiate your signal from the rest of the callers who simply click on a packet spot. Several things can differentiate you from the rest: - Frequency - as you learned - Timing - when you call in the pileup - Speed - how fast you send - Length - how many times you send your call This list is great for cw. There are variations on this theme for other modes. Often, if you spend a little time listening to the behavior of the DX station, you can make exactly the right choices and get a reply on the first or second attempt. These techniques allow stations with smaller signals to compete with the big guns! 73 Jim K1IR On Sat, Sep 27, 2025 at 10:14 AM Christopher Lennon via bars wrote: > My rig is just 20W to a piece of wet string, so I struggle to break > through pileups when operating CW. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <84BA9DEC-64FB-470B-95D2-CB785D3C21F9@k1oa.com> Chris, Adding to Jim’s excellent CW pileup advice I would also recommend using the second VFO if you have one in your radio and enabling split mode. The typical setup is to listen to the DX station on VFO A and use VFO B for your transmit frequency. Some splits are large enough to be beyond the range of XIT. The ideal configuration is to mix the audio from both VFOs in your headphones so you can simultaneously hear when the DX is listening for a call and monitor the pileup while you tune VFO B for your next transmission. A popular pileup technique is to continually tune just beyond the last caller’s frequency, especially if you’re not running high power. I’ve also had success going 5 or even 10 kHz above the pileup where nobody is transmitting. Call there for a while and if you don’t have success move down 1 kHz at a time toward the edge of the pileup. If you have a spectrum display this can help you find the clear frequencies high up in the pileup. It’s a lot of listening and learning the DX station’s pattern as Jim points out. Low power DXing is a real challenge but VERY rewarding when you get ‘em in the log! gl and 73, Scott K1OA > On Sep 27, 2025, at 10:14 AM, Christopher Lennon via bars wrote: > > My rig is just 20W to a piece of wet string, so I struggle to break through pileups when operating CW. I have used split but only in structured ways like for QRP Fox Hunts where the Fox expects to be looking up a kHz or so. Of the items on Jim's list the only thing I do regularly is modify my code speed. Mostly I try to match the CQ speed. One of the knobs on my transceiver is programmable, and I have it mapped to code speed, so I can do that without a lot of fiddling. Chris W2BPL Sent from my phone. In PoTA the activator ends with a friendly e e, and the hunter replies with an e e. When I hear the second e e I feel free to throw out my call sign. Here's the link for this month's newsletter posting: https://www.w1hh.org/october-2025-billerica-amateur-radio-society-newsletter/ This Wednesday, 10/1, is our monthly membership meeting. Note that the meetings are now hybrid and will take place at the Chelmsford Bible Church at 128 Gorham Street in Chelmsford AND via Zoom at 7 pm EST. I am pleased to announce that our Guest Speaker for the October Club meeting will be Barry Feierman, K3EUI, and he will be giving a talk entitled “Nano VNA for Rookies” and its applications to ham radio. Barry has given numerous talks on this great device, so I am sure that you won’t want to miss this presentation. For more information, please visit the meeting announcement post on our website at https://www.w1hh.org/october-1-2025-bars-meeting-barry-feierman-k3eui-nano-vna-for-rookies/. Any materials or recordings from the meeting will be shared via that post after the meeting. Be sure to check out this month's newsletter on w1hh.org, to watch BARS TV, and to get more info on our upcoming meetings and events. As a reminder, BARS dues run from January 1 through December 31. Dues are just $15 for the year and help pay for the club's Zoom account, the website, Field Day activities, etc. If you have not renewed, you can do so online at https://www.w1hh.org/join-or-renew/. If you're not sure if you are current or not, email our club treasurer, Bruce Anderson, at w1lus at hotmail.com. 73, Dave KC1TLF -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I assume this crime was a customer robbery, but if someone wanted to clean out the ATM ($60K back in the day) they would have to grab the cash person as he or she was going into the service entrance in the back of the kiosk with the Field Rep already inside. Both persons were required to access cash. The Rep. had the combo lock dial key. One industrious Rep. named Bob looked over the cash person's shoulder to get the combos one Sunday evening. He later went back and cleaned a few ATMS, splitting for Canada in the bank's car. The Canadian police pulled him over after he went through a stop sign. He had a wife and a baby at home. 73, John K1JG > On 09/29/2025 1:42 PM EDT Christopher Lennon via bars wrote: > > > There was an armed robbery at an ATM on South Broadway in Salem on the 23rd of September.
