She will be updating us on the latest trends and happenings at the ARRL these days. You won't want to miss this presentation! Dave, KC1TLF, can you please publish the below on the Club Website? Here is Kristen's bio: Kristen has been interested in radio since she was about 5 years old. When she was small she built many radio kits including her favorite: the one tube radio kit. She started in Amateur Radio around 1979 while she was at MIT by getting her technician's license. She built a 2m repeater with an autopatch to use while on campus at MIT. Somewhere in the middle of all this life intervened and her license lapsed. She has recently been re-licensed getting her extra ticket. She has recently held the call signs KG6OGQ and AE6KJ in rapid succession just prior to K6WX, a vanity call. She is now active on 2m, 1.2GHz and is active on HF with an Elecraft K2 she built while on vacation visiting her mother. Kristen often does her HF-ing mobile with the K2 and a hamstick or from her apartment with a homebrew helical vertical dipole and an IC-7600 driving an AL-811H. These days she loves to chase DX using mostly CW, and works contests from time to time. Kristen is also licensed in Japan, her second home, as JI1IZZ http://qrz.com/db/JI1IZZ. Kristen is ARRL Technical Coordinator for the East Bay Section and is president of the Palo Alto Amateur Radio Association for 2007, 2008, 2010 through the present. She is also a member of the following clubs: Palo Alto Amateur Radio Association, South Bay Amateur Radio Association, NCCC, USS Hornet Amateur Radio Club, Northern California DX Club, Northern California Contest Club, FISTS CW Club (10232), NAQCC, SKCC, and Young Ladies Radio League. Kristen is also net control twice a week (well, once a week for now since work is pressing) for the 9 am talk net: http://www.9amtalk.net/ Kristen is a long time denizen of Silicon Valley and has worked at or consulted for many of the usual suspects. Kristen's work bio: Kristen McIntyre is currently a senior software engineer at Apple working on OS X and iOS. She recently came back from being an entrepreneur in Japan. Previously she was a researcher at Sun Microsystems Laboratories where she was researching robustness and emergent properties of large distributed computer systems. Her career has spanned many diverse areas. She started in the early 80's designing high power linear amplifiers and then spent about 5 years in Japan architecting and designing precision analog test systems as well as learning Japanese language and culture. Upon returning to the states Kristen joined Adobe Systems and became one of the architects of PostScript Level 2 and its RTOS underpinnings as well as the principal architect of AppleTalk networking for PostScript printers. In the early 90's she became a consultant and later founded an internet service provider and a network consulting firm. In 1999 Kristen decided to hang up her entrepreneur's hat and landed at Sun, tried the startup thing again only to land at Apple, where she's been since. Kristen holds a B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: Hello members, I've been exploring adding a "Member Map" to the website so we can all see who is in what town. I have a demo running and you can see the screenshot below. Basically, if there is a member in a given town it would have a blue marker. Mousing over the marker would show the town's name, clicking on the marker would bring up a list of members from that town. Below you can see I clicked on the Tyngsboro, MA marker and it shows my name. The map would be password protected behind the members only section of the website and members would be able to opt out of having their location added if they desired. Is this something of interest to the members? Please share your thoughts. [image: image.png] 73, Dave KC1TLF -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It is that time of the year where we start pitching for ham radio support for the annual Westford Apple Blossom Parade. This year's parade will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 16th. The parade starts in Westford Center and ends at the Abbot School. It has been hosted by the Westford Kiwanis (https://westford.org/kiwanis/) and has a long history in town. PART has been providing comm support for many years. Parade starts at 10 AM, we usually muster around 8AM for any last minute updates and to insure adequate coverage. Parade is pretty much wrapped up around noontime. Your assignment could finish earlier. All you need is a 2 meter FM handheld that works with the Westford 146.955 WB1GOF repeater. Some assignments are stationary at specific parade route locations, others may be to be a shadow to one of the Kiwanis Parade organizers. We are looking for 12 (minimum) to 16 hams for this event. This is a GREAT event for a first time public service event participant. Very laid back and calm event. It's always fun to watch a parade! Pls take a look at this Video https://youtu.be/LLJBfWf2JVk?si=7Q68j7DckxUCStGC To get more precision use nanoVNA saver , then narrow down the sweep range, and repeat to get a more accurate freq reading of the dip. Above is probably the simplest, you could do it with just S11, by making a simple wire coil at the S11 port, and then moving your circuit close to the coil and watching the S11 logmag for the dip. This is a close analog of the old grid dip meter, or a grid dip coil + an antenna analyzer like the one MFJ sold with their 259 and other meters. Watch this very short clip at the end of a longer video https://youtu.be/kuDkdrI4bBc?si=O3deEjqbwZQB6A89&t=398 Cheers, Bammi -----Original Message----- From: bars On Behalf Of Andy Wallace via bars Sent: Wednesday, February 25, 2026 10:54 PM To: W1hh Subject: [bars] NanoVNA - measure resonant freq of parallel L/C circuit? Message-ID: Hello BARS members, To alleviate the administrative burden of manually emailing the list about website posts, I've added an automation to my home AI automation server that will automatically email a copy of new website posts to this email group a few hours after they are posted. The delay gives me time to correct mistakes I might make in the initial post. You can identify them because as they will start with [W1HH.ORG] in the subject and be from my email address. In fact, you should have received one just moments ago for our guest speaker announcement next week. Despite me having "send copies of my posts to me" turned on in the email list software, I don't get a copy so my super smart AI automation platform will CC me. However, if people see problems with the message after it gets to them from the list, please forward me the emails and let me know what issues you are seeing. Thanks and 73! It turned out I could use the S11 port, set for SWR, and set stimulus to sweep around 455 kHz. The item in question is the L/C BFO network out of a 1960 R-390A receiver. The symptom was I could adjust it for lower sideband but not upper. The variable inductor (ferrite slug) shaft was near end of travel. Using the NanoVNA like a grid dip osc with a coil on the end would work but since the circuit was output directly to pins outside the can I just clipped the VNA to the right leads. Bingo, nice trace. It shows the assembly resonates at 454 and 480 kHz at the ends of the travel - verifying my symptom. Two photos attached. It should be like 445-465 kHz. So I can probably fix it with a parallel cap. Does anyone here know how I can use this to (like an old grid dip meter) measure the resonant frequency of a parallel inductor-capacitor circuit? I imagine it uses only the S11 upper port. Tutorial link much appreciated. Other than doing the cal I have not used my NanoVNA.
