We appreciate everyone’s patience as we make an off-topic post on the need for Amateur Radio Volunteers for the 2026 Boston Marathon. We are still in need of a large number of volunteers for the 2026 race. In addition, there will be no volunteer deadline extensions unlike past years so if you are even considering to register, please register before the listed deadline below of Friday 2/6/26. In addition, there is a continued need for medical volunteers for the 2026 Boston Marathon and those interested in volunteering as a medical or general volunteer can use the register.hamradioboston.org link and they will be brought to the general volunteer page which can be utilized for those that are not Amateur Radio Operators to volunteer. Further details for Amateur Radio volunteers follow below: Volunteer registration for the 2026 Boston Marathon is open and ongoing.  If you've already registered to volunteer at the 2026 Boston Marathon, we'd like to thank you for your interest in joining our team! For anyone who hasn’t yet, please don’t delay! Volunteer registration closes on Friday, February 6. It would help our planning processes if you could complete your registration by Friday, January 30. Registration Link (for new and returning volunteers): https://www.baa.org/races/boston-marathon/info-for-volunteers/ Step by Step Sign Up Guide: https://hamradioboston.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/44002570599-2026-volunteer-registration-step-by-step-guide A few notes for volunteers: Almost all amateur radio positions are single person assignments.  We are not able to group people on a single assignment, but we will try to accommodate which segment you are assigned to in order to allow for similar start/end times. We'd like to extend our sincerest congratulations to the winner of the Boston Marathon ARO bib lottery, Sparsh Bansal, KC1MGP. We're looking forward to cheering you on! Final documentation is generally released during the first week of April. Before this can happen, we need the final logistical details from the various area coordinators for Start, Course, Finish, and Transportation. Where possible, we will release documents as they become available. In this case, look out for emails from the committee and your Team Captain. As always, we appreciate your help in getting the word out to prospective volunteers. Please send this to hams or clubs that you think may be interested in joining us on the amateur radio team for the 2026 Boston Marathon! If you have any questions about the content of this message or about volunteering at the marathon in general, please don’t hesitate to send them to contact at HamRadioBoston.org. We’re looking forward to seeing you all again soon! Message-ID: <9ec3e7fd-4949-4615-b291-a7f02d9eb232@gmail.com> The 2026 World Wide Award (WWA) is in full swing! The WWA is a month-long event involving hundreds of activator stations from the world over.  Hunters can contact the activators once per band/mode combination per day to gather points through the month.  The event is active on 80-10M with CW, SSB and digital (FTx, RTTY, PSK) modes active on these bands.  At any given moment several hundred activator stations are active (for example, as I type this there are 210 stations on the air). To gather points you only need to get in the log of the activator stations - a simple '59' exchange will do it.  You do not need to submit a log, the activator uploads the logs, in real time, to the event database.  In fact, you can see your status in real-time om the event website. As I type this, there have been over 2 million QSOs logged from over 100K hams, in 246 countries. I am one of the MA stations activating N1W.  I'm happy to answer any questions about the event, or you can dig into the details at https://hamaward.cloud/wwa . 73, and have fun with your radio! My friend Jim (some of you may remember from field day) is going to do it with me. We will be operating out of my parents-in-law's house in Bedford. We are going to make an attempt to claim the 6 Bands multiplier. I don't have an antenna for 160 and 80, and 60, 30, 17 and 12 are not allowed. I need 3 contacts on each band, and I believe they have to be WFD stations. I should have no problem with getting four bands out of 40, 20, 15 and 10. So, my only chance is VHF and UHF. I only have handheld 5W radios in those bands. No repeaters allowed. I thought I would periodically call out on the simplex calling freqs to see if anyone else is in my predicament. It occurs to me that there might be others on this list with a similar challenge. Anyone out there within range of 5W simplex UHF/VHF to Bedford doing Winter Field Day? If you follow my steps below, you can triply you battery run time for your cell phone. Let’s assume you are in a big storm and you have lost ac power. Since you have no AC power, you have no use for WIFI! Turn off you cell phone access to both WIFI and Bluetooth! I-Phone: Settings>WiFi, turn off! Settings>Bluetooth, turn off! You can save more power by setting the phone to “Low Power Mode”. Settings>Battery, “Low Power Mode” PS: Don’t forget to charge up your External Cell phone Batteries today! Miles WF1F PS: I am still still around.  i just have new hobby. I am now an actor.  i have been in over 20 movies during the last 4 years.  I got tired of hi-tech. Most of the time i am just background. Sometimes i get to drive cars on camera too. I drive a 1990 caddie in Walking dead, dead city. on April 29th apple will start a new series called Widows-Bay. I don't have any speaking lines, but i am in  a few episodes. And i still get to play with radios on-set. 73/88's From douglas.bruce1 at comcast.net Wed Jan 28 13:53:30 2026 From: douglas.bruce1 at comcast.net (DOUGLAS BRUCE) Date: Wed, 28 Jan 2026 14:53:30 -0500 (EST) Subject: [bars] Net Notes W1HH Net January 28, 2026 Message-ID: <1015180832.902481.1769630010038@connect.xfinity.com> Welcome to this week’s edition of "NET NOTES" !!
