<div dir="ltr" data-setdir="false">I don't have Jim Evans's info, but for what it's worth, <span>I have a Baofeng UV-5R HT. I am quite pleased with it. It's only about $35 on eBay or Amazon. The sound from the speaker is loud and fairly clear. It works with a headset. You can program it with Chirp. The included software I am told is, charitably, murky, and it runs only on Windows. I use Ubuntu. Chirp is fine. The stub antenna is pretty poor, but I changed to a Nagoya whip antenna and noticed a big difference. In my car, I use an MJS-1729 magnetic mount dual band antenna and I can stay connected to the Waltham repeater almost all the way home to Reading. Billerica repeater is clear from my house if I'm on the second floor with the Nagoya. The user manual is pretty bad.</span></div><div dir="ltr" data-setdir="false"><span><br></span></div><div dir="ltr" data-setdir="false"><span>The UV-5R is nominally 5 watts output. They have recently come out with a model that looks to be identical except with 8 watts and a bigger battery for around $65. I don't know how much better it is IRL.
