With a handheld, if you are too far from the repeater, indoors — especially downstairs, at the bottom of a local valley or low point in town, or maybe you are in just the wrong spot — sometimes a few feet can make a difference — if you are not be keying the repeater. On the other hand, from a local hilltop you can hit repeaters at fairly great distance w/ great ease. Too, check Tx offset is on, it should automatically default to the right direction (+ or - .600).

Check that the Transmit Tone “T” is set correctly and is On, also turn Off Tone Squelch “TSQ” or “CTCSS” (Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System).

BARS’ repeater is 147.120+ (so Tx is 147.720), Tone is 103.5 Hz to open the repeater, but it does not transmit a tone back to you.

If I press the MONI/T.CALL switch the lights at the top are both green, and I receive fine, but I fear there's still an issue, as when I depress the PTT, they are both red.
