<div dir="ltr">I think you're starting to build something like a "Drake Equation" (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_equation" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_equation</a>) for hams. <div><br></div><div>I would sketch out:<div><div>L = country's population of licensed amateurs<div>A = percentage currently active</div></div><div>H = percentage active on HF</div><div>M = percentage active on the mode/band you're using<br></div><div>P = factor for propagation </div><div>T = compatibility of timezones</div><div>etc</div><div>Where the "presence level" you're feeling in on-air contact rates would be something like P = L x A x H x M x P x T x ...</div><div><br></div><div>Another way to factor in to it would be aspects like relative prosperity (to buy nice equipment), rate of home/land ownership (to put up substantial antennas), or social factors like the prevalence of clubs (perhaps supporting better facilities, or encouraging participation) or the likelihood to organize contests, field days, etc. These are probably "orthogonal" to and would cut across the "activity level" factors on the list above.</div><div><br></div><div>My gut feeling is that Italy, Spain, and Germany probably are in a sweet spot of population, wealth, and geography/propagation related to US-east-coast hams.
