My initial thought was didn't the station have any equipment that would have shown the operators there was a problem transmitting? Seems like the VSWR would have been a dead giveaway that something had gone very wrong.

To say the quiet part out loud, it seems sad that the issue was discovered by landscapers, not by an influx of calls to the station asking why they were off the air. (Or perhaps the landscapers were sent to see why it was off-air?)
