Hi Jay, nice to hear from you after all these years. This is your former student Art Pizer from your comms theory class. I agree with the folks that are saying 10 watts is not for the beginner on HF. It can be frustrating. It requires a lot of, patience skill and a good antenna. 100 watts is a far more versatile choice to get started. The required antenna efficiency is not as critical. Recall that the radio I brought to your classroom demo for single sideband was 100 W radio. I made a demonstration contact with an 8 foot whip antenna out the window of the building without much difficulty. If you want the challenge of lower power, you can always turn down the power control of 100 W radio to 10 W, that way you would get the feel of it before committing to a low power rig also known as QRP. The 100 W class radios of today are less than half the size of the one I brought to your demo. Well, you can certainly find a good deal on one of those type of radios used. As a point of reference, the radio I brought with me was either an FT 900 or FT 890. I can’t remember which one. They are both around 25 years old give or take . No offense to the longtime friends of mine on this email thread who enjoy QRP. this is just my opinion based on my own experience.

Folks, which would you prefer the Yasu 991A vs the Icom 705, both seem to be HF to 70 cm.
