The"auto" shut off can be remedied by a 20AHr LiFePo4 battery and sufficient bonding to auto. I know this as have an iC 7000 and Little TarHeel Ant hooked to a pwerwerks 20Ahr batt in a box, bonded to my auto. I found 40 meters would feed down the RG 316 coax
and trip the rig if not bonded. Yes my car has 3 ant: HF, 2m70cm, and a scanner unit. But Radio mobile and a ready setup for POTA is fun for me. BTW I have an Icom 706 MkIIG with the 1.9 MHz opt filter and voice chip installed. Additionally it has the remote
kit and mounting bracket. Selling for below Ebay cost when tax and shipping added to total ebay cost. Email me if interested. Condition is like new, only out of box to install options and live test.</div>

This is a very good point about the value of a waterfall display. What that provides, especially for a newbie, is the ability to visually see what is happening across an entire section of the band. It also provides insight into possible interference.</div>

One place where the IC 7100 shines is as a mobile multi-band radio. However, a multi band radio in a car, with the attendant antennas and installation issues maybe not. Oh - transmitting with the car's electrical system for power, most or all Icom radios shut
themselves off when power is below 12v. That can easily happen during transmission.</div>

I started out with the ICOM 7100 and I still have it and use it regularly. I like that it covers HF, VHF, and UHF. When I'm not on travel and join the net, it's almost always on this radio.</div>

However, I later got the ICOM 705. It's 5W with the internal battery and 10W with an external battery. I bought the backpack and put in the LDG 100+ antenna tuner and external LFP battery. What I love about it that I don't have with the 7100 is the waterfall
display - I never had one before on a radio.</div>

If I were buying one rig today, I would buy the 705 and then if I wanted more power, I would add an amplifier. (It covers the same bands as above.) That way, I could take the 705 on the road, as I do now, and have more power at home. Mind you, I don't have
a "shack" or anything like that - I have a small table in the living room next to my computer desk. So, that's the limited world of my perspective. However, I work hard on matching my antenna to the frequency (I mostly operate portable) and I've made contacts
all over the world on just 10W.</div>

the both of them but I was leaning towards the Yaesu due to it being a shack-in-the-box but then I read a few other things that made me change my mind. I was having issues being heard on the Wednesday night BARS net using my Explorer QRZ-1 so I wanted to
make sure I had 2m covered. However, a LOT of people said I was better off with two rigs versus the single rig. One reason was single point of failure vs. multiple points. Another reason was I could only monitor/use one band at a time. I also heard the
Yaesu menus took some getting used to but discounted that figuring I didn\u2019t know any menu system so none would be \u201cweird\u201d to me.</span><u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="x_x_x_x_MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">I ended up getting an ICOM-7300. I found it on eBay. It was being sold by a silent-key\u2019s daughter-in-law. The radio came with all attachments, was in fantastic
shape and also came with a practically new ALINCO power supply and an LDG-100 autotuner. I verified it was a US Spec (has an FCC ID label) as there are a ton of Japanese spec rigs on eBay. They have limited power as well as smaller bands (i.e. the BARS PART
repeater would be out of band on them). I got it for a good price and the money saved between a new one I purchased an AnyTone AT-778UV which is a 25-watt very small 2m and 70cm mobile radio. I was able to purchase the ICOM with PS and Autotuner, the Anytone
and a magmount antenna for less than the cost of a new ICOM (currently $999 after rebate). I\u2019m pretty happy with my choices although explaining to my wife why I needed another radio after the ICOM was interesting.</span><u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="x_x_x_x_MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">What are you trying to do with the radio? The Yaesu is more of a base rig and the ICOM-7100 is more of a mobile rig. Figure out if you\u2019re more into base operations
or mobile and that might help your decision.</span><u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="x_x_x_x_MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Also, a lot of people are raving about the new Yaesu FTX-1 (Field or Optima configuration). Both the FT-991 and the ICOM-7300 are a few years old and getting a bit
long in the tooth so much ado about a new rig.</span><u></u><u></u></p>
