Andy-
Congratulations and welcome to Ham Radio!
The FT-60R is an excellent handheld. It's very tough - I've had one for
years (as well as a lot of others) and it has held up very well.
However...
You should also DEFINITELY get yourself an HF rig. Although if you are a
Technician, your license class doesn't allow you access to much of the
HF spectrum, with a bit more study you can upgrade to General (if you're
not already there). HF is where there's a lot more action, more fun, and
much much more to learn. So definitely get an HF rig and at least start
listening in. Depending on budget, you can get a used rig (IC-756Pro
series, excellent quality/value, performance) or if you want to go new
the IC-7300 is a best bet.
Get on HF and really experience the magic!
