The Yaesu FT-60R is a good radio.  You should be happy with it.  I note that HRO has them for about $150.  There is also an open box for $135.  If you choose open box make sure you askabout the warrantee.

Another option is the Yaesu FT-65R.  It goes for only $80.

You can load these radios up with lots of options atHRO.  The most important is acharger.  Make sure that there is a wallwart included with the radio, if not buy one. You don’t really need the drop-in charger.  Next is a programming cable.  You can program the radio with the keys onthe front of the radio.  This can betedious and computer programming makes it much easier.  This radio is supported CHIRP.  CHIRP is free programming software, but I alwayssend them some cash via PayPal if I use their software on a radio.  Next is a larger antenna.  The rubber duckie they supply is OK, but ifyou want to work longer range repeaters you may need one of these.

See how easily you can come up with $65 worth of extras on an$80 radio.

Good luck and let us know what you buy.  Join us at the next BARS meeting onWednesday, Feb. 5 to show off your new purchase.

Hi BARS,

I just got my license (as in yesterday) and now a little perplexed on
where to start. I went into it thinking I'd start with a FT-60R from Ham
Radio Outlet in Salem, NH.  But, I took a wrong turn and searched the
internet for advice and now I have second thoughts.

Thanks!
