    As it turns out, I spent nearly two hours yesterday morning at HRO in Salem.  I had plenty of time to look around and then had the pleasure of  Cal's expertise to demonstrate some of the features/benefits and costs of the various options.  We are lucky to have such a place so close to us.

   I was sitting across the table from you at the previous Saturday breakfast (7/17/21), and I want to thank you for bringing up Echolink.  I had it running on my PC and on my iPhone by last Monday.  I would have used it to log into the Wednesday night net but we had a dinner party that night and I could not get away.  For me, having Echolink minimizes the value of the Yaesu's 2 meters capability.

Your two selections are great.  Either of them will do nicely and give many hours of enjoyment.  The specifications are comparable so it's difficult to use these as selection criteria.  The main differences between these radios are screen size (Icom wins) and cost (Icom wins).  If you want the two extra ham bands, 2 meters and 70 centimeters, Yaesu wins.  Yaesu also has digital voice capabilities on the UHF and VHF bands.

The 991A is an older design but could be good if you want HF VHF UHF all in one package (including Digital C4FM/Fusion). 

Like twenty trillion others I have an IC-7300 and love it. At $999 I think it’s the best value out there. Once you realize what a handy tool a fast response waterfall/spectrum scope is for finding stations, you will never go back to a radio that only displays frequency. 

Youtube has reviews of all current transceivers out there. Handy to see what the rig is like before trying one. 

And tube rigs live on. I just bought upgraded filter boards for my AC-4 and am looking forward to putting my old Drake TR-4 back on the air. But the 7300 is the daily driver.
