Indeed, Matt, rigs can be like tools in a drawer depending on what you need them to do. 

A small rig with a small display is better for SOTA. All in one like the 991A is better for a cramped shack. A rig like discontinued FT-450D has a large frequency readout that’s good for people with poor vision.  Etc. It’s like cameras. The right one for you is the one you take with you not the one that sits in the closet.

The 991A is an older design but could be good if you want HF VHF UHF all in one package (including Digital C4FM/Fusion). 

Like twenty trillion others I have an IC-7300 and love it. At $999 I think it’s the best value out there. Once you realize what a handy tool a fast response waterfall/spectrum scope is for finding stations, you will never go back to a radio that only displays frequency. 

Youtube has reviews of all current transceivers out there. Handy to see what the rig is like before trying one. 

And tube rigs live on. I just bought upgraded filter boards for my AC-4 and am looking forward to putting my old Drake TR-4 back on the air. But the 7300 is the daily driver.
