ELF sub coms were coded three letter messages as I recall(?) due to the very slow rate arising from extreme low frequency, a few characters/minute, and one way only, to the subs. 

On a sort of related note, KH2PZ/KH6’s stories of working at USCG marine Radio Station Honolulu, callsign NMO, on 600m (500kHz) in the late ‘70’s…
