Oh, have no fear...  I blast through them regularly on HF! ;-)  At those 
frequencies they are basically transparent.

However, the story is different at microwave frequencies.  The same 
principal that makes your microwave oven work are what causes leaves 
(mostly the water in the leaves) to absorb microwave energy.  My 
minuscule knowledge of the ARDEN project is that they use repurposed 
WiFi routers in the 2.4 or 5Ghz ranges.
