In my experience, yes, you can make FT8 contacts on 2 meters, but they need
to be in the local area, and you need to try a contest weekend.

The best time to try this would be the ARRL VHF contest. The next contest
is September 14 to 16.

With my station, I can usually get about 5 to 10 contacts on FT8 2 meters
on the ARRL VHF weekends. I am using an ICOM IC-705 which produces about
10 watts. My antenna is a horizontal dipole in the attic. This antenna is
easy to build.

I have also had good luck during the CQ magazine VHF contest.

During the ARRL Field Day, I found one station on the air on FT8 2m.

If there is no contest on a particular weekend, then it is very difficult
for me to find FT8 activity on 2 meters.
