[bars] Yaesu 991A vs icom 705

Jay, the 705 is only 10W when powered by 13.8v and even less on batteries. That’s what is called QRP, low power operation.

Some might think QRP rigs are nice for beginners because simple ones are cheaper than 100W rigs. But it’s like ultralight fishing. You need to get experience with 10 lb line test fishing before you try ultralight. :)

I see the appeal of the 991A covering HF, 6, 2, and 70CM all mode (and I believe Yaesu Fusion C4FM which does have several active repeaters around). And it saves space.

I use an IC-7300 for HF+6 and an FTM-7250D for 2/70cm FM and Fusion. Unless you really want to do the infrequent VHF/UHF contests or weak signal work with a good antenna, putting money toward a good HF+6 100W rig with a good waterfall display makes more sense to me.

Go to HRO in Salem and take rigs for a test drive first.

Good luck in the hunt!

Folks, which would you prefer the Yasu 991A vs the Icom 705, both seem to be HF to 70 cm.
