I've always had a hard time with the dB scale. I new that it was 
logarithmic (exponential) rather than linear but that was about it.  
This video does a reasonable job of explaining the basics, including the 
difference between dBi, dBm and dBd.

BTW, to convert dBm to watts, divide the dBm value by 10. calculate 10 
to that power, divide this value by 1000 to get the power in watts.  For 
example, 50dBm: (50/10) = 5, (10^5) = 100,000, ( 100,000/1,000 ) = 100 
watts.  If I understand dB correctly you could skip the last step by 
subtracting 3 from the result in the first step.  So 10/5 = 5, 5-3=2, 
10^2=100.
