Good contesting practice is for the CQing station is to give your call between QSOs. It helps those who just found you to know who you are. A quick “CQ W1ABC” doesn’t take much longer to say than “QRZ”. It’s poor operating practice to say “QRZ” over and over. The rules for the CQ sponsored contests say you can be disqualified if you use “QRZ” more than three times.

'QRZ' is short for 'who is calling'.  Typically you would use this if you are having trouble hearing a caller, or only caught part of a call.  Some folks use it in place of, or alternating with 'CQ'.
