[bars] Hams as % of population

I think you're starting to build something like a "Drake Equation" (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_equation) for hams.

I would sketch out:
L = country's population of licensed amateurs
A = percentage currently active
H = percentage active on HF
M = percentage active on the mode/band you're using
P = factor for propagation
T = compatibility of timezones
etc
Where the "presence level" you're feeling in on-air contact rates would be
something like P = L x A x H x M x P x T x ...

Another way to factor in to it would be aspects like relative prosperity
(to buy nice equipment), rate of home/land ownership (to put up substantial
antennas), or social factors like the prevalence of clubs (perhaps
supporting better facilities, or encouraging participation) or the
likelihood to organize contests, field days, etc. These are
probably "orthogonal" to and would cut across the "activity level" factors
on the list above.

My gut feeling is that Italy, Spain, and Germany probably are in a sweet
spot of population, wealth, and geography/propagation related to
US-east-coast hams. I would assume that Japanese contacts are a bigger
percentage of a US-west-coast ham's experience.

Interesting question to explore!
